The limitation of the trial is mono+24kHz. Any file opened is "resampled" to those parameters.

The developers/salespersons must be on drugs to think that professional soundcards will work at that samplerate; for example the 2 soundcards in this PC are:
Realtek (onboard Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R motherboard) soundcard = 44.1/48/96/192kHz only
Solid State Logic MX4 (http://www.solidstatelogic.com/music/xlogic%20mx4/) = 44.1/48/88.2/96kHz only

Therefore how is the professional user supposed to
(a) evaluate the software
and
(b) be satisfied that it works correctly with their particular soundcard(s)?

It's actually 24Khz or less, but I agree this is a little odd.

Compounded to the fact that you can"t even save your work and the trial lasts only 15 days...

The Process>I/O worked for a while then all of a sudden stopped working.
Now projects won't even playback.

The time I worked with it showed that for what it does it's easy to use and very capable.

SpectralLayers shows promise and keeping in mind this is only version 1.0, the next major revision should be fine.

They are on the right track.

Cheers

I have to admit that I was excited after watching the demos. My excitement went away after I couldn't get the trial version to work on playback. I click play .... Any nothing happens. Scratching my head on this one. Any ideas?

So, despite having lodged a Support Ticket the day I installed the trial, and receiving a reasonably rapid, but useless, response, to which I also responded rapidly, there has been no further communication or assistance from SCS - & now the trial has expired.

I have since found out that my soundcards will work fine when other applications (e.g. SoundForgePro abd VegasPro, Reaper etc) are playing 24kHz files through Microsoft Sound Mapper, Direct Sound Surround Mapper & Windows Classic Wave Driver, due to on-the-fly samplerate conversion.

Therefore have to surmise there is something terribly wrong with the SpectraLayers Trial, and have no confidence that the unlocked full version will be any better.

No Trial, no Sale.

Upon first installation I too had no audio output. I went to my Windows Sound control panel, selected my output device, and opened 'properties'. Under the advanced tab I changed the default settings and tested. (I selected 16 bit 48KHz).

For some reason, I had audio after I did that. But I reset my default to 24 bit and 48 KHz and I still had audio. For some reason just changing this setting 'woke' things up and I had audio from Spectral Layers after that.

(My trial period is over - can't try anything anymore).

Update Build 21 removed the 22kHz stupidity; I was eventually able to run the Trial on another PC (as the Trial had expired on the original PC by the time this update was issued) and thus determined that Spectralayers will run indeed on my specific hardware fine - subsequently purchased....

Thank you SCS for making what should have been relatively easy so painful.

Let us know how your experience goes, ChristoC! Hopefully, it improves with the real version.

Hi Doug. Now I got it working fine and dandy; testing with a few old troublesome files I can justify purchase, however I think it is not the panacea for all troubles and noises, and is much more difficult / fiddly to use than say iZotope RX2, Cedar DeClick & DeHiss, or Alogrithmix reNOVAtor, but it sure fits into the available arsenal to help save an otherwise good and valuable take, especially where the extraneous event/noise is shifting pitch and also rich in harmonics.

Things I find annoying about SpectraLayers, which I think should be fixed:
- does not retain BWF timestamp chunk on File Save.
- saved WAV files are WAVEFORMATEXTENSABLE format, which is a format hardly used … instead of “normal” WAVEFORMATEX format. Therefore some DAWs will not open these files directly.
- no ASIO input setting. Therefore no direct recording from ASIO soundcards.

Thanks for the update. If you figure out a way to register an entire area (all frequencies) for the Register Noise button let me know! The only way I see is to "paint" it with the Extract Noise tool and I just can't get that to happen cleanly. The noise reduction is amazing, but the artifacting because of the incomplete selection is quite a major flaw.

Adding to your list of shortcomings, I've found that the primary thing I am trying to do - split files into two frequency ranges using the Extract Area tool - works perfectly only once, requiring a restart of the software between every file. If I don't restart every time, subsequent files will have slight inconsistencies that are quite visible onscreen and, of course, audible as well. I contacted support, included an example, and of course, have heard nothing.

Hi Doug,

the best way to split your file into frequency ranges is to use the rectangle selection rather than the extract area tool, much quicker and accurate than using a hand brush...

Hi divide,

I have to confess to having difficulty with the rectangular selection tool. There's something about using it that's not obvious enough to me in the help. I am able to make a selection (I see the box). Beyond that, copying the selected material into the new layer sometimes works sort of, sometimes not. Either way, it's not the result I'm looking for. I'm sure it's me, but I just don't get the procedure. Perhaps the continued presence of the selection on the screen is messing it up as well. How do I unselect that? I'm confused. And are there any properties for the selection, like the hardness of the edge or anything? Extract Area has that.

Doug

I noticed that in true sony fashion the p[rojects are at 48000 sample rate I had to cut it back to match my soundcards set rate at 44100
