Subject:2 copies of soundforge...one works, one does not

Hi. I have 2 desktop computers. I bought 2 copies of soundforge. I know you if you buy one copy of soundforge you can install it on 2 computers as long as you only use one at a time, but I thought that I would buy 2 copies anyway, so I wouldn't have to worry about making sure soundforge was closed on one computer before I used it on the other computer. Anyway, when I use soundforge to play a wav file on one computer, it sounds fine...however on the other computer, soundforge doesn't play the wav file properly...it is very distorted. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling soundforge, I checked the settings to make sure they were the same on both computers, and most recently I got a new soundcard, the soundblaster ZxR.That didn't work so I again uninstalled soundforge, then logged in to the sony account and downloaded another copy of soundforge but it still doesn't work. I am using windows 7 on both computers. I have the same motherboard on both computers (ASUS P8H77) but different video cards. When I play a song in itunes on the computer that has the soundforge problem, the song plays fine. The version of soundforge is the same on both computers, it is Version 10.0e Build 507. On the computer where soundforge works properly, in Device Manager under "sound, video and game controllers" I have 3 entries, which are
AMD High Definition Audio Device
Creative SB X-Fi
Realtek High Definition Audio

On the computer where soundforge doesn't work properly, it shows
High Definition Audio Device
Sound Blaster Audio Controller
Sound Blaster ZxR
Sound Blaster ZxR DBpro

I right clicked the High Definition Audio Device, and disabled it, but that didn't help.

Any suggestions please?...or is there more information I need to supply. Thanks.

... I also have acid pro 7, and when I load the wav file in acid pro, it plays it fine without distortion.

Have you tried a different 'audio device type'?.. "Options> Preferences> Audio"

That worked thanks! I tried changing those settings before but it didn't help, and soundforge on my #1 computer is set to microsoft sound mapper which works, so after I put the new sound card in computer #2 I didn't bother to change the audio device type. I now have sound forge on computer #2 set to Creative Sound Blaster ASIO Device, and I unchecked the rear and center speaker options so it now plays wav files fine.

However, now one problem remains, which is sound forge can't record "What U Hear". On computer #1 under Audio Device Type, on the "Record" tab, it says "Recording device routing:" and under that, it says "Microsoft Sound Mapper - Left", and "Microsoft Sound Mapper - Right"...and sound forge can record "What U Hear" fine On computer #1. But on computer #2 I can't record "What U Hear". under "Recording device routing:" it has the word "Enable" beside the numbered columns, but I can't see any options for me to choose...and I went to control panel...sound...and under the recording tab, I set "What U Hear- sound blaster ZxR" as the default device. I played a song with itunes and was able to record the sound using the windows sound recorder program found under the accessories folder, although it wasn't a good quality recording. ..so I guess computer #2 knows how to record "What U Hear", but I can't do it with sound forge.... while playing a song in itunes, I changed the device type to Microsoft Sound Mapper, but as soon as I pushed the record button, the sound being played from itunes sounded distorted, and when I played back the resulting sound file from sound forge, it was all distortion. Anyway, if this can't be fixed, do you know if acid pro 7 can record what U hear?...or is there another program that is good for recording? I sometimes use that "What U Hear" option, and I also have a lot of vinyl records to convert to wav files. Hopefully sound forge on computer #2 will record ok thru the aux jacks, because computer #2 is the one with the best sound card and is closer to my turntable.

Sorry, I can't help you much there, that's an issue with your SB soundcard and PC.
That said, a few years ago I did offer instructions for a Dell PC / Vista / Realtek scenario.
It's on this forum, but I don't exactly know where to find it.. Search this forum if interested.

FWIW, recording through Sound Forge would not necessarily get you any better quality than any other software app.s.. (providing all other input parameters are equal and saved in a non-compressed format)
Best of luck.

Ok, thanks very much for your help. At least I can use sound forge to play and edit files now, which is a lot better situation than before. Perhaps I'll disable the onboard sound card in the Bios to see if that helps, although I'm sure the onboard sound card on the other computer isn't disabled. The pc is built by a local computer shop, and uses the same motherboard as the one which has the working copy of sound forge. If I can't figure it out maybe later I'll ask Sony support to see if they have any ideas...also maybe I should get one of those diagnostic programs, run it on both of my computers, and have a person experienced with those things to compare the two results.

I disabled the onboard sound in the motherboard bios, but no difference. I will try to think of some other things to try.
