Subject:Not recognizing Shure X2u

I'm a voice-over talent, just installed my new Shure X2u for use on my netbook with SF Audio Studio 10, latest build 178. I cannot find the X2u as an option for a recording device. Google has been no hel, and the term X2u does not appear so far in this forum.

I'd appreciate it very much if someone could clue me in. Thanks!

Did you set up the Shure in the Windows Control Panel for 'Sounds and Audio Devices'? Looking at page 20 of the manual it says you should look in the Audio tab and further look for Shure Digital in the drop down menus for Sound playback and Sound recording.

Windows should have kicked up a 'Found new hardware' message in the Windows taskbar at the bottom of the screen.

Did you get the "New Hardware Found", and subsequent "Installing..." messages when you plugged in the X2U for the first time ? Can you find the device under Options | Preferences menus ?

Curious as to how you anticipate doing voice-overs with SF though. An application capable of multi-track recording would seem more appropriate-ie one that can simultaneously play back one track while recording another, such as Vegas or Acid.

Jeff and Jack, I apologize to both of you. I assumed I'd get some sort of notification when i got a reply to my original post, and when I didn't, I assumed there was no response. My bad.

Well Sony finally replied a few months later. I checked everything Sony told me to, and yes, the driver installed when I plugged in the x2u, yes, it does appear with a green check mark in the Sound/Recording tab under Control Panel, yes it IS recognized when i use Audacity on my netbook, but no, it does not appear as an option in Options/Preferences/Audio. All is get is
Micrsoft Sound Mapper
Direct Sound Surrouns Mapper
Windows Classic Wave Driver

Also, I am having this same exact problem on another OC, a new build I have running Won 7 64-bit! Both this and my netbook run the latest 178 build of Audio Studio.

Got any ideas? I might have to sell my x2u. (I am having the SAME issue when I plug in my Focusrite iTrack Solo too!!!).

If you goes to Control Panel | Sound and Audio Devices | Audio , is the X2U visible as a Sound Recording option. It may show as "Shure Digital".

If it is there, then there is a chance that it is in fact one of the options being offered in SFAS, maybe differently named as the options: Direct Sound Surround Mapper or Windows Classic Wave Driver.

Also you could select it as the default record device in Control Panel, and select Windows Sound Mapper in SFAS.

However I still cannot imagine how you are planning on doing voice-over in SF (any SF) , unless it's a total new soundtrack over a video-only event, or the new audio is totally unrelated to any exist audio on the video. Because in SF you cannot record a new audio track while listening to an existing one - you need Vegas or Acid to do that. SF in not a multi-track DAW.

Geoff (sorry I misspelled your name!),

If I go to Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Sound/Recording tab, I do see “Shure Digital” with a green check and it is listed as a “default device” I can see that it is getting a signal too.

I did wonder about perhaps the label in SFAS might not be what I was expecting, (i.e., not labeled as Shure). So I tried it out using Windows Classic Wave Driver, and sure enough, when I switched to it, now “Shure Digital” shows up as an option for Default Recording (and Playback).

I use the full version of SF 9 for professional VO recording, using an Echo Mia sound card. And in that version, Echo Mia shows up as an option under Preferences, so I was fully expecting to see “Shure” as an option there.

Apparently then, Windows Classic Wave Driver is the appropriate driver for the x2u – NOT what I thought it would be at all, hence my puzzlement. Thanks very much for your help guys!

And fyi, I've been using SF for about a decade to record VO. I do not need multi-track capability as I am only recording my voice. I generally do not add any production values myself – I send the raw WAV or AIFF off to my clients for them to use under video (or on the radio, or TV, or web, or whatever the application). If I was a full-blown studio, yes I would need Vegas or some other competing software. For my simple needs, SF is plenty good.
