keyboard hookup to record

I posted this in the Audio forum but I thought I would also post here because the responses are usually quicker. I ususally just do video but my son wants to record into Vegas using a Casio digital keyboard (PX-400R). There are connections for USB and also a L/R audio out. I tried connecting the USB but I'm not sure I have the options set up correctly and I don't see the keyboard listed for Vegas recording devices. I then tried the L/R audio out from the keyboard to the Line In on the computer sound card (ASUS Xonar Essence STX). I'm using a dual 1/4" to a 1/8" stereo cable. I chose the settings for my sound card as Line In. I then went into the Vegas options and chose ASUS Line In for the recording device. I can't get Vegas correctly setup to record the keyboard. Please Help!

Unless you bypassed it in your BIOS, make sure it's enabled in the Windows sound recorder.

Manual says the USB is a data port, not audio, so you can't record to Vegas that way.
The line out is sufficient to record to your computer. Many people miss activating the record inputs on their computer. Access to these varies by sound card and OS.

This is strange. To get anything to record I had to set Vegas Preferences>Audio Device tab>Audio Device to Windows Classic Wave Driver and the Default audio recording device to Line In (Asus Xonar), and in my sound card menu I have to have it set to Record-Mic. When I set my sound card menu to Record-Line In it won't work. Also, the sound is terrible, it is coming through both my computer speakers and the keyboard speakers. It has a lot of static noise. I know I set this up before but that was like 8 years ago and I can't remember what to do to make it work correctly. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

I'm only speculating here, as I'm not familiar with your keyboard. But I would guess that the keyboard's USB output is transferring MIDI, not audio. Vegas isn't a MIDI sequencer (it supports MIDI only for control surfaces), so if you want to record MIDI via USB, you'll need to use ACID instead. To record audio, connect the keyboard's Line Out to your sound card with an instrument cable.

If this is the sound card you have, check settings are correct according the the sound card gui.

FAQ:
I cannot hear audio input (Mic, Line-in, AUX, etc.) from my speakers
Instructions:
1. Go to the mixer recording page in the Audio Center and select the correct
input as the recording source. If you are using Windows Vista, also go to
system audio control panel to see the current default recording/input device is
right.
2. Remember to turn on the digital monitoring button for that recording source.

You may also want to verify that the output from the keyboard is at a level that the sound can handle sometimes line outs can be loud (hot). Watch the meters on the card's user interface. You don't really need to monitor the sound from the keyboard thru the computer speakers so mute this from the gui.

I don't use Vegas to record because it doesn't do MIDI but hope this helps..

Do not plug your keyboard line out into mic in!
Your line in record input is either not active or volume is turned down.
You are going to need to find your mixer recording devices in order to correct this.
