Subject:Recording a Skype call with Sound forge

I need to interview people occasionally - ideally at no cost to both of us. I need to record the call for later transcription. It dawned on me that I could use Sound Forge (v 9.0c) with Skype - but I can't seem to pick up the audio using a Logitech headset and mic. I use Windows XP Pro on a laptop. I've reviewed the Help info, and tried recording just me speaking into the mic on the headset that is plugged into one of my USB ports - but still no sound is being picked up. Is there something special I need to do to be able to record a Skype call? Is there something else that I need equipment-wise? Are there settings I need to check/adjust in Volume Control on my laptop?

All help is appreciated!
Paula

Depends on your computer, but many do not have "what you hear" recording available. Check your Advanced audio mixer control.

You usually need software, such as "Virtual Audio Cable" or "All Sound Recorder" to send the audio signal to SF record inputs. Sometimes, running a cable from the earphone to the line in jack on your sound card will work.

Thanks for your input! My understanding of how audio pick-up works from different sources is rather limited, so I appreciate your patience.

My sound card is nothing special but here's the options I see in the Volume Control/Advanced. http://screencast.com/t/epeDABaa The cable idea sounds like a good one. I'm assuming the jacks are the ones I see on the left side of my laptop with the mic and headphones icons next to them?

Those are your Playback controls.
You need to look at your advanced Recording controls to see if you have any capability.
Best.

Where might those be? Again - not my specialty...

Meanwhile I've found some free apps that supposedly work with Skype - capturing both sides of the conversation.

I tracked down a free Skype friendly app called Callnote from Kanda. Seems to work with my short test with Skype. I will need to test further.

Thanks for your willingness to help!
