timeline selection

stevengotts wrote on 3/1/2013, 6:59 PM
Ive just upgraded from 10 to 12 but im ready to jump back to using premiere. In every other nle ive used including older versions of Vegas, the in out selection operates separate from placing my cursor. now I spend more time fighting this autoplacement of timeline selection, then I spend editing.Vegas editing used to be faster and simpler than Premiere. Now its hands down opposite. How do I turn this "feature" off. When I want timeline selection, Ill drag it exactly to the in points and outpoints I want. What am I doing wrong? I dont want to learn this feature, I want it off.
Thank You.

Options / Preferences / Editing > Collapse loop region when no time selection is present?

What exactly are you "fighting"?

Can you give an example of what's going on?

stevengotts, I don't understand.... I feel no differences in VP12, just the same with VP10...?
Is it on the MAIN Timeline ?
Perhaps a step-by-step process on what you do in VP10 ? plus, step-by-step process in VP12 ?

I was gonna say, i don't think that has changed since Vegas was born.

Oh I think I know what you're talking about (but I could be wrong) - try
Options>Preferences>General>
Make spacebar and F12 Play/Pause instead of Play/Stop

Is that it? Cause that drove me BATTY when I first got Vegas - and yes, it does waste a lot of time, because you're bouncing all over the timeline, wasting incredible amounts of time.

Hi
I have a clip on timeline, when i attempt to place my cursor with mouse, the timeline selection area jumps around giving me random selections. after a bit I get what II wanted the yellow selection bar across my clip and my cursor on frame 1 one of my clip. then placing my clip on a later clip adjusts the yellow selection and i have to put it back. I started on vegas 2 and dont ever remember this. is it the "collapse selection" prefrence mentioned in this thread. Im trying to figure what Im doing wrong.
Thanks in advance
Steven

I tried the "collapse timeline" preference.
Heres an example. I mark 4 mins in 5 mins out.
then with that loop marked, I place the curser at 2min.
the in out selection jumps automatically to 2 min in and 4 minutes out.
This is frustrating and I see no purpose for me for this behavior. help me shut this off.
Thanks

I cannot duplicate this error at all. I don't think it is an option, I think it is an error. Are you using a standard mouse?

Under Preferences General there is an option to Allow Cursor to be dragged. If this is unchecked then everytime you drag the cursor it creates a selection.

I cannot duplicate this. I can place the cursor anywhere and not have the timeline selection/loop region move/change. VP12 b486.

Thank you Dave you are the winner. actually I unchecked this box and know appears to function close to what I expect. BTW I do use a Razer Naga gaming mouse, also Windows Mouse settings were becoming suspect. I was getting nervous at the thought of losing all the third party "super powers" the vegas infastructure has
Thanks Again

When I saw "timeline selection" and "Premiere" in the same post I immediately thought of the non-standard multiple selection process in Premiere. Everywhere else in the Windows world it seems that you multiply select items by clicking on the first item and then with the shift key down you click on the last. In Premiere, shift click on the timeline does something different, I forget what. To multiply select items on the timeline (but NOT in other panes) in Premier, you have to use a marquee (click and drag).
