OT:Upconvert in VirtualDub using Lancos3 and...

I know I've read bits and pieces about this here, but when I search, I'm just not coming up with anything substantial or most likely not asking my question properly.
Can anybody point me to a decent guide to using VirtualDub and Lancos3 to uprez my SD footage? Or simply tell me? I want it to look even better than what I've done in Vegas alone. I virtually have NO money to work with, so I need to go the free route. I'm having to zoom in, quite a bit on SD footage and it's coming out ugly and 'blocky' I would love to buy the plug ins I've read about here, but that is completely impossible at this time.
Also, I've not tried smart rendering yet, but would like to render sections of a long video and then smart render them together in Vegas 10. I mostly make mp4s, but seem to only remember mpeg2 and acvhd mentioned in smart rendering. Is smart rendering automatic? Or do you have to choose it? I will be sidetracked for hours if I try to find this in the manual.
Thanks in advance.

You may want to post your question on Doom 9 forum; this one is pretty Vegas-centric.
Please don't expect miracles from upsizing, using Lanczos or anything else. It's just not very acceptable beyond small adjustments.

Vegas does not smart render either MP4 or AVCHD, only MPEG-2 and some AVI.

I've been. Using the BCC8 uprez plugin for resizing in Vegas lately. It does a very high quality uprez.
