Subject:CD Drive Not Found Using "Burn Disc-At-Once"

I make mix CDs for personal use, and have used Sound Forge Audio Studio for a few years now with no issues (and I mean NONE until now). I am using SFAS 9.0d (build 232) and I used it to successfully burn a mix using "Burn Disc-At-Once" as recently as seven months ago (July of 2012). However, the CD Drive is now not showing up.

If I select Help, About, and go to Multimedia Devices, the CD drive is recognized (HL-DT-ST BD-RE WH12LS30), and I can burn CDs and DVDs with another piece of software, but it doesn't have the Burn Disc-At-Once feature. Plus, I figured I paid for a legitimate copy of SFAS and it has worked until now, so I don't understand why this is happening (and more importantly, what I can do to fix it).

I found this among the Known Issues list, and wondered if this is part of the problem:

"If you have a USB SmartMedia reader device installed on your PC, you may experience problems when you attempt to access your CD drive from Sound Forge Audio Studio for extracting audio or burning CDs. This is due to an error in the SmartMedia reader driver. Using the Unplug or Eject Hardware Wizard to remove the reader should allow Sound Forge Audio Studio to function normally." (source: http://dspcdn.sonycreativesoftware.com/releasenotes/audiostudio90d_readme_enu.htm)

I don't have a SmartMedia reader device attached to my PC. The ONLY hardware configuration change I made to my PC in the past seven months is that I switched from one SSD drive (Corsair Force Series GT CSSD-F60GBGT-BK) to another SSD drive (Crucial M4 CT256M4SSD2). The drive is a huge improvement in performance, but could it be recognized by SFAS as a SmartMedia reader device? To me, that sounds like a stretch.

In the past week, I even reinstalled Windows 7 Pro SP1 and only installed the bare essentials software-wise but that didn't fix the problem. I'm an analyst, so my job is figuring things out, but the solution eludes me. I have a degree in network administration, so computers aren't foreign to me. Please help because I reached out to support via email (a week ago) AND telephone (on hold just now for 30 minutes so I hung up) and I've had absolutely no response.

PS: The topic on the "support" page below is totally useless and has not been updated for two and a half years. The driver on my CD drive is current. I'm just showing I read all over the site and couldn't find the solution.

It's Saturday. I posted Monday. Other threads have been posted and responded to in that time. Just wanted to bump this topic because I haven't seen a response over the past week. SonySQAPete, any thoughts? I'm not buying SF 10 if this is the lack of support I'll get.

"I'm not buying SF 10 if this is the lack of support I'll get"
-- This is a peer group and has nothing to do with 'official' SCS tech support, though SCS personnel will comment occasionally. FWIW, SCS tech support usually takes more than a week to respond, according to other posts.

I find it funny that the only response I get is totally useless. The "...lack of support..." bit regarded the fact that I emailed the official support team two weeks ago now and haven't had a response. Also, 30 minutes on hold waiting for support during normal business hours is completely ridiculous. Don't comment if you're just going to troll.

Solutions, not commentary.

So, I called support again and they did answer within about five minutes - I must have called during an actual heavy volume time previously. The tech rep had me update my driver to my CD Drive (http://www.lg.com/us/support-product/lg-WH12LS30#). LG's site sucks btw for locating drivers - it's under Support, then Data Storage (which, really, I kept looking under "Burners & Drives", because a CD Drive is really a burner/drive not a data storage device - don't be a d-bag and try to hold me to technicalities on what could be CONSIDERED a storage device). The tech rep told me he just Googled the model, but then, I did the same thing and didn't find that site...clearly a second pair of eyes helps.

Well, the update didn't fix the problem. I have concluded that SFAS v9 and v10 do NOT work on the Solid State Drive that I installed six months ago (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148443). As lame as that sounds, it's the ONLY thing that changed since the last time I burned using Disc-At-Once. I purchased SFAS v10 in hopes that it would resolve the issue - no luck.

The immediate solution turned out to be installing SFAS on my wife's laptop and then the Disc-At-Once feature was fine. So, that's it. You can't use SFAS v9 or v10 with the SSD that I linked up above. Yes, I updated the driver for the SSD as well. No, it didn't help.

In my statements in this forum posting (the only string I'll post in because of this problem) I found that I'm rather negative. Forgive me, but working with hardware, software, and firmware often enough to know that there is some programming solution on the SFAS side just really frustrates me. I know, they have a heck of a program, but it's just very annoying that a hardware change can actually disable a significant feature.

Of course, they got my $65 for v10 because, let's face it, that's still a good price for a solid product. Here's hoping they find this post and work through it for v11 or a v10 update.
