8 Cores, but only 4 rendering threads?

I just recently got an older used dual quad core Xeon. I'm running XP and Vegas Pro 10.

Under options, I'm trying to set the number of redering threads, but I seem to be limited to 4. I can't select more than that. My understanding from reading the rendertest posts is that I should be able to bump this up higher.

XP reports all 8 cores in device manager, and they show up under the performance tab, so they are truly there and online.

Am I mistaken in my assumption that I should be able to increase the rendering threads above 4?

Also, there was mention in one post regarding in the General settings there is a checkbox to limit multi thread rendering of AVI files. I can't find that listed, and I have not found it in the help manual.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Tom

is it 32bit vegas?
think you need 64bit version to have more then 4 option to choose.

if you go to 'internal' preferences (hold 'shift' when you click preferences in options) there's 'max for maximum video render threads' and 'max for maximum video render threads (64bit)' - you can change values in there

Ah - 64bit OS and Vegas - that explains it.

Thanks!

A too high number of rendering threads might decrease rendering speed in stead of improve it.
Try to do some experiments with your normally used setup (input/output formats etc).

Have yet to test my new hpz820 but with my dellT7500 dual quads xeon with HT , use all 16 threads to render and can assure you this is beasty fast rendering in vegas pro. Here vegas pro does an excellent job. ( GPU off )
