Editing a video for the Iphone 4

I have a video someone shot of a family member. They sent it to me and it's in "Portrait Frame." I'm using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Plantinum 11. I want to edit this little video with a little something then convert it to iphone format using my convertor. But how do I make sure the aspect ratio can remain in portrait mode for the iphone?

They shot it taller than wide? It's not shot sideways, right? It's literally tall, narrow video? Uh oh.

You've got a couple of options:
1) Give it to them sideways letterboxed -- that is, with black bars along the left and right side; or
2) Crop it to fill the screen, at which point about 2/3 of the height will be cut off.

Those are pretty much your options. And the first is probably better than the second, ugly as it is. Movie Studio doesn't allow you to create a custom frame size, taller than wide. And, even if it did, you'd pretty much be limited to posting it to Facebook, since TVs are all wider than they all tall.

Does the video play sideways when you load it in Vegas? If so, use a secondary monitor and rotate it to portrait mode, and edit away. unfortunately, Vegas may not set the alignment bit or metadata so that the video plays in portrait on the iPhone again. I am not that last part matters, since they shot it portrait, the phone may not care.
