Subject:SF10 does not delete sfk files on close - why?

Hi all, I'm running Sound Forge 10 Pro (latest build) on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1. It's a fresh installation of both the OS and Sound Forge on a new laptop. I have checked the "delete temporary files on close" box in the Sound Forge program options. However, the sfk files created for each audio file are simply not deleted when Sound Forge is closed. No error message - they're just left exactly as they were. I didn't see this issue on another Windows 7 64-bit system. Has anyone else experienced it? SFK files are not considered temporary files. They contain the visualization of the audio waveform of the file, if Sound Forge deleted them then it would have to rebuild it every time you opened the file. |

Hi John, Thanks for posting. In the help file page for general preferences, it says: "Delete temporary files on close: Select this check box if you want to delete the peak (.sfk) and proxy (.sfap0) files associated with a media file when you close a data window." But curiously, today, I found that Sound Forge was creating and leaving sfk files alongside some wave files, but not all. All the files are the same format (44.1/24-bit) so it's odd that it's inconsistent! |

I've found that a few .sfk files do remain if I've re-opened the .wav associated with that sfk file after initially saving it. It's odd, but they sometimes do tend to disappear after closing Sound Forge. Other times, you just have to manually delete them. There was an early bug in SF 10 where temp files were not being deleted at all. Make sure you check your temp folder for stray files and report it if they are not being deleted. Rob. |

And sometimes, if a SFK has been created and deleted, reopening the file does not create a new SFK ! Eeven if SF closed and reopened. geoff |

For me it only saves SFK files when the WAV file isn't modified. |

If I open a file for first time SF generates an SFK. I can then close the file, close SF, delete the SFK, re-open SF and the file, but this time no SFK is generated ! geoff |

Why does anyone want to delete .sfk files? Color me naive. Is there some circumstance where one might want to increase the time spent opening a file in a Sony application?? |

Sometimes I want to delete them if: (1) the wave files are very long (several hours) and rarely used. I want to save disk space, especially if I am archiving stuff to CDs/DVDs. (2) the wave files are for release in a product and I want to make sure there are no rogue sfk files (or indeed peak files from any other application) that might get bundled with the release version. ------------------------ Anyway having been looking at this more, I must say that the behaviour seems to be very inconsistent (or consistent according to some mysterious principle!). Sometimes the sfk files are created, sometimes not; generally if they are created, they aren't deleted - but sometimes they are. Brilliant. :-s Message last edited on6/21/2012 9:52:27 AM byiain_m. |

Now I see. You want to save WAV files that are Gigabytes in size but delete the peak files, KB to a few MB in order to save space. Sorry, I've not experienced any of the unusual circumstances you report. Couple of times had to delete bad .sfk files and let them rebuild, that's it. |

.sfk files are always created the first time i open a file containing audio in Sound Forge / Vegas / ACID / DVDA. I've never seen an exception. I keep the .sfk files around until i know the project probably isn't going to be edited again for a significant period of time. Otherwise, as Musicvid says, why waste time with the software having to recreate them? I often sort my directories by file type, which puts all the WAV files together in their own section, all the MP3 files together in their own section, all the AC3 files together in their own section, all the SFK files together in their own section ... etc. .sfk files become pretty much ignored and of no concern. |

I respect your opinions about file management...but what I'm asking in this thread is simply why SF does not behave as it is meant to. The manual says that "delete temporary files on close" means that sfk files will be deleted, but at least some of the time, they're not deleted. |

Yeah, my workflow demands that those .sfk files disappear. I edit thousands of files at a time and then deliver them to people who barely understand what a wave file is. So, extra junk in the folder would cause me major headaches. Plus, the .sfk files are just annoying when you've got bunches of files in a folder. As for the random .sfk files that occasionally show up, for whatever reason, it seems that they are just a nuisance that SF users will have to tolerate. I agree that they should disappear as advertised if I select that option in the preferences. Rob. |

Any new news on this? I also would like it if the SFK files were ALWAYS deleted if the option that's suppossed to do this is selected. Has Sony chimed in confirming there is a bug here? |

Goodness knows what's going on. Support take months to reply; bugs have been left unfixed for years; Windows development of SF seems to have ground to a halt. :-( |
