Subject:Midi track volume slider? Acid Pro 7 -screenshot

Hi all, New to midi in Acid here. I'm trying to adjust the volume of a midi track that's playing back, and the volume slider seems to do nothing. Is this normal?

Here's a link of my screenshot. I've only worked with audio tracks up to this point. The mute button will mute the track, but as you can see I can pull the track volume slider all the way to 0 and it still plays. Nothing I do w/ the volume slider seems to change volume on midi track at all.

So I guess the question is: If this is normal, how do I adjust overall volume of midi tracks? thank you in advance. appreciate any response.

I normally use Shift+V for a volume envelope on the bus track view (B key brings it up). I wasnt sure but checked and can also Shift+V on the main MIDI track header and that works as well.

Im sure there is a correct routing for the main volume slider, Ive just always done it with an envelope.

I tried clicking the touch tab on the MIDI track header and starting a song. Moving the volume slider generated the volume envelope in realtime on the main MIDI track view.

What soft synth are you using?

If you use the ACID supplied DLS GM synth, does the volume work?

Actually - I notice the volume works with Kontakt Player 2 vst.

On both Shortciruit 1.2 sampler and TAL Noisemaker synth vst the volumes don't work in Acid. I'm planning on trying these in Ableton Live soon to see if it's the same issue. Also maybe try in Traktion. (I'm trying to find a good platform for working w/ midi and as a newb to midi it's tough - keep hitting my head on issues I don't understand)

I've done quite a bit of web search and I think it might have something to do with CC#7 and CC#10 for volume and pan and finding out whether these plugs "listen" to those "signals" for volume and pan. I'm so new to midi that it barely makes sense to me but it sounds like some vst don't have standardized channels they listen to for volume and panning instructions. I've looked in the TAL Noisemaker manual and can't find any reference - may have to contact the developer (?). Same for Shortcircuit.

Thanks for posting.... I know the "clueless" like myself can be a pain. I don't mean t be - I sometimes just don't understand enough even w/ the help of google.

Hi Peter,

re: "If you use the ACID supplied DLS GM synth, does the volume work?"

I don't see a synth called DLS GM synth in my softsynth list. Does it show up under the name "DLS GM synth" in the "insert soft synth" menu? As mentioned above though, Kontact Player 2 does respond to volume though.

No it shows up as Sony DLS Soft Synth.

"No it shows up as Sony DLS Soft Synth."

I see it now. (I downloaded a bunch of the free vst things to test and am not sure what most of them do. I'm seeing now I should've been a bit more selective).

Anyhow, yes volume works on the Sony DLS Soft Synth. It and Kontact Player 2 have the volume working. Shortcircuit and TAL Noisemaker are unresponsive. I haven't tried with others so far.

The problem is with the soft synths and not with ACID. The volume control on the ACID MIDI track is sending MIDI Volume messages to the synth and the synth is not responding to them. I have the TAL Vintage and it has the same problem. It doesn't respond to the volume control on my M-Audio Axium 61 MIDI keyboard or the volume control in ACID. Definitely not an ACID problem. You'll need to control the volume of these poorly written soft synths from their bus.

JohnnyRoy, thanks for the info. The TAL Noisemaker really does have some cool sounds though. I'm going to keep "plugin" away trying to learn these things. It does get complicated fast tho. BTW I've heard that maybe some VST listen to channels other than CC#7 and CC#10 for volume and panning, and that Acid will let me change those. Not sure if it'll work for the TAL synth, but I'm keeping that in mind for when I learn a little more how all this works.
