Recording Backup Question

I record a 30 broadcast from a standard Canon GL2 to tape. I want to record directly to a drive and have two options. Which is best?

1. Record fire-wire to a laptop
2. Record unto a portable Compact Flash DTE Recorder

Does option one lose any quality?

Once it's digitized it's just a data stream of bits. Doesn't matter where or how it goes after that; it's still the original data.

Yes. I was just wondering if one way can cause more of a choppy transfer or a higher failure rate?

Firewire is 400Mbps. Most any device connected behind it can probably keep up over 100Mbps with ease. You only need 30Mbps.
