hi,

how can you open cda (cd audio files) in soundforge?
I have a lot of sample cd's, but i want to edit them in soundforge, how can this be done?

Goto Tools>Extract audio from CD.

.CDA can't be directly imported into sound forge by drag and drop. You must extract the audio as a .WAV file.

You will need a CDA-to-wav ripping program that will rip the cd audio directly to a wave file. There are some simple, free ones on the net if you do a search for them, and some more complex ones that you would probably have to pay for, but include features such as automatic sequential naming of samples, whether you want the samples ripped individually or as a group, and so forth.

A dodgier way to do this is to set your recording source under your software mixer as the CD player (assuming you have a CD-rom drive on your system), set the sound-forge recording module to remote so you can access both the cd player controls and the recording controls, and press record and play the cd tracks you want to sample. Just make sure your recording level under the software mixer isn't too high or you will get clipping, or too low, where you will get a lot of system noise in the background.

The ripping programs are definitely more desirable.

I know sf 5 has a extract cda to wave command (I think it's on the tools menu). This gives you the option to extract the complete cda cd or one track at a time. When you extract it, it converts all cda into one big wave file, you can then use the markers to separate the wave files and extract them as individual files as a batch command. The only drawback with this is that it takes a long time to drop all markers. You will then have to convert markers to regions. (Look at the keyboard shortcuts help file this will speed it up a bit). Hope this helps.
