The best way is to "put a sock in it". Or on it. Here is a link where the subject is discussed ad nausea. This is one you don't want to have to "fix in post".

If you are using a shotgun mic, you can put it in a Rode Blimp. I couldn't believe how well it works.

A blimp (or "dead cat") cuts wind noise for all types of microphone.

I find that Spectral Repair in iZoptope RX2 does a very good job at removing (or considerably reducing) wind noise (and lots of other noises too).

Just been re-editing some of my "windy" clips using iZotope RX2 as plug-in in Vegas 12, and although the process is not very intuitive, the results are very good.

Afraid that iZtope RX2 is not a cheap program, but it's brilliant at what it does.

As others have mentioned, there are numerous "dead cat" choices, depending on whether your mic is built-in or an external unit.
Rycote has several consumer products, starting on page 41 of their catalogue.

As was stated, it is best to address wind issues in acquisition... not after the fact.. 'we'll fix it in post'.
Low level rumble can be attenuated via an low cut filter (EQ), Otherwise it can be addressed with a spectral plug-in as 'grip' stated. Severe wind distortion just plain can't be fixed... except for re-shooting or ADR.

Interesting... on page 45 & 51, they have super mini dead cat mic covers (micro windjamemer) for built in camera mics. B&H Photo has them for $20.
