OT - How to download embedded Flash videos

Hi, sorry for the off topic question.

Does anyone here know of a tool smart enough to let me download embedded flash videos? Up until 6 months ago, I could easily do this using several og the common tools out there, HiDownload, GetFLV etc. etc. But lately, the national broadcaster here where I live has made it impossible for these tools to get hold of the stream.

The reason I want to do this is because I am making a documentary, and want to use clips from the news and some TV reports. I could use screen capture apps - the problem is that I live out in the bush, and broadband is here so slow. It makes online TV jerky and it stutters so much is is really impossible to ge a fluent screen recording.

I have tried dozens of tools - do not work.
Any ideas are very much appreciated. I am using the latest Flash player (in fact, the TV site requires is).

I use the DownloadHelper Firefox plug-in.
However, there are sites that use proprietary players, the DH cannot get at.
That may be your issue.

Gi Tom,
thanks, yes it is definitely using a proprietary Flash player "wrapper", as I would call it. Hm..
Still the Adobe Flash engine is playing back the video
Wonder how it would be possible to deal with this..

With the newest Flash download prevention, the only way at present is with a screen recorder.

Uhhhh.... isn't that STEALING?

My first thought would be to contact the site administrator and ask for permission to use their property. Maybe they don't want to be a part or your documentary? Maybe they have a certain way/name they would like to display when you give them credit?

- If they answered YES, then I would ask for a better format.
- If they answered NO, I would move on.

You can't just download/steal people's property and use it in your project without their consent. [i]and don't say, "I'ts OK". After all, it's in a proprietary player which means they are trying to protect it from download/theft or unauthorized use.

My first thought too!

It is the Norwegian public service TV. The TV news program in question is always available online (not time limited). In my film, it will be displayed inside a browser, so in my film it will appear as if I am filming my screen. And that is perfectly legal, they same way I will use newspaper articles in my film and hold them up in front of the camera.

I appreciate your concern, but rest assured - everyhting will be legal. In fact, I my ultimate goal is for the same broadcaster to publish my film!

All the more reason to contact them.
- This will assure that you are displaying their media in a manner they agree with & desire.
- It shows your professionalism and respect.
- It builds good rapport with the broadcaster.

It's not a question of Legality but more-so Morality.
