OT QTime animation problem in DaVinci 9

Hi,

I have rendered in Vegas files to mov container with animation codec 1280x720x50p (with or without alpha).

After import to DaVince Resolve Lite 9, can see that program is oppening files, but is slugging fatally and have to kill application, because even operation in menu are going very slow (app is still waiting for something).

Has anybody experienced the same ?

Best regards,

Have you already done other work successfully in DaVinci Resolve Lite? In Philip Bloom's recent review of the BMCC he talks about needing an extremely powerful computer (in his case Mac) to use it effectively.

Hello Nick,

I'm doing some corrections in Resolve all the time - two days ago I have installed version 9 (previously had installed 9beta on the other comp, but have been working on version 8). But my basic platform for edition is still Vegas.

I usually don't use amimation codec (uncompressed) but now have to grade some movie which marge normal movie with CGC (models) - so dediced to use this.

Using other formats (description of codecs is done by BlackMagicDesign) can tell you, that DaVinci has very powerfull engine for preview and on my i975 with 12GB o memory 'it's flying' - even if LITE version is installed.

DaVincei has - from my POV - very serious weak point because not cover AVCHD codecs. I have been discussing this with BMD, but they are convinced, that AVCHD is not suitable for color grading (too mach compressed and 4:2:0) and they do not plan to implement this. Bad luck, because all my cameras are AVCHD and don't have money to invest in external recorders in order to get 4:2:2 AVI via HDMI. Have to use intermediate files. Another remark : in most cases I have to do denoising with Neat in Vegas before color grading - in DaVince Lite denoiser is not present - it mitigates pain.

I was alwas using some 'lighter codecs" like in mov photo jpeg which DaVinci can cover. IMHO quality of color grading is not very fantastic (even if high option of rendering is choosen) - can see artifacts. I was reconed, that if will have really high demand in terms of quality (like in this moment) I will be always able to use uncompressed animation for hi end quality. After test done yesterd I'm confused, because it looks like DaVinci can't cope with this format - maybe this is problem with this emmision of software, don't know, would like to confirm or share experience with other.

Some time ago was storline about Vegas, that for some people Vegas presents strange behaviours, that is 'freezing' for 30second for example and there is not communication with application at all - I still have the same when I'm trying to change rendering parameters in render dialog for MOV container. What I can observe now in DaVinci is exactly the same - program is loosing responsiveness even for 1 minute if I want to work on MOV animation codec. But it happens everywhere, even I want to click on pull down menu, so it's impossible to work.

Best regards,

QT Animation is terribly inefficient.
Have you tried QT PNG?
Have you tried Avid DNxHD? It's 4:2:2 like ProRes, and supports Alpha.

and i've had banding issues using Animation codec... switched to lossless.

PNG is great for sRGB / DNxHD great for video.
(render time will increase using either)

Yes, banding is a big problem with Animation. Lousy compression scheme.
It's not truly lossless either, despite what we've been force-fed.

If you still want to use those QT codecs, you could try rolling back to Quicktime 7.6.2 to see if that helps. If it doesn't, it's easy to update again to the latest Quicktime. I also think DNxHD is a good idea.
