I've been recording into SF 4.5 from CD & DAT happily for some time. I've just got a mini disc (JVC XM-R700SL)and whenever I try to record into SF from it I just get 'noise' and can just about hear what's on the MD in the background. The quality of the sound coming through my PC speakers whilst I'm recording is however fine. Please please somebody help me. |

In order to help, you need to tell us about your connection (M/D ---> Sound Forge) & the settings you are using. JL OTR |

Oh dear, I'm abit of a novice and not quite sure what you mean by MD---SF connections/settings. The MD Sampling frequency is 44.1 and I'm connecting to the pc via a mini jack to mini jack extension. As for the PC it says the audiodrive is ESS SOLO-1PC1 (if that means anything). I've been saving the files as WAV files. Anyway, all of this works fine with any imput device other than my minidisc. (I've tried recording from said minidisc onto a mac and that's fine too). |

Not sure about your JVC, but if it's anything like my Sony 909 portable there's a single jack that toggles between headphone and analog line out. If you leave it set to headphone and patch it into your computer's line in, the sound quality can be quite bizarre. The solution (if that sounds familiar) is to use the MD deck's menu to set the output to Line Out. |

Also, are you recording using the Microphone input? or the Line In? If you're using the Line In and you're using the head phone jack on your JVC (I'm not familiar with that MD unit) then you'll overdrive the line in jack if your volume is set too high. If you're using the microphone in, and you are using the headphone jack, and the volume is set too high, you'll also probably overdrive the input. Now, if you're using the microphone jack, and the line out, you may not be getting enough drive to really drive the mic. Mel |

what sound card are you using? are you using analog inputs or digital? If you are going analog, are your sound card's inputs -10DB or +4DB? are you using headphone level or line level out from the MD? Idealy, you get a MD with SPDIF out, and a sound card with SPDIF in and go all digital, no prob. if going analog there are a number of sources for noise, the output amp on your MD, the cable you are using, the input on your sound card, the quality of the A/D converter on your sound card. just make sure the levels are good and do the best you can. Also keep in mind, CD and DAT sound way better than MD anyway. So can cassette for that matter. |
