Can someone confirm? ASIO and MIDI relationship

Hi,

As a result of my issues with MIDI being enabled in 511, and the crashes I encountered, and comments from Geoff, Streamworks and others, it looks like there is a relationship between ASIO, MIDI and crashes.

3 of the 5 devices I use for sound, have MIDI built into them.

I just tried an experiment, and was able to repeat the errors.

Source video is a 1920x1080 clip, I'm rendering to only BluRay 1920x1080-60i, 25Mbps, AND I have audio included in the render.

Here are the sound devices used. (All latest drivers loaded)

eVGA SR-2 Motherboard - Built in Sound (SR) - No MIDI

Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 (NI) - This DOES have built in MIDI

Presonus Studio Live 16.4.2 (PS) - This does NOT have any built in MIDI

Condition 1) SR and mapped where windows uses it as the default device. In Vegas, I use the MS Sound Mapper. RESULT - No problems

Condition 2) NI and mapped where windows uses it as the default device. In Vegas, I use the MS Sound Mapper. RESULT - No problems

Condition 3) NI and mapped where windows uses it as the default device. In Vegas, I use the ASIO driver for the NI. RESULT - The file renders correctly, but when you close the dialog box, you get the following error.

The ASIO device Komplete Audio 6 caused an internal exception (0xe06d7363) and has been disabled.
The ASIO device Komplete Audio 6 caused an internal exception (0xe06d7363) and has been disabled.

Condition 4) PS and mapped where windows uses it as the default device. In Vegas, I use the ASIO driver for the PS. RESULT - NO ERRORS.

Folks, to me, this is a BUG in Vegas. Where if the ASIO device has MIDI built into it, even though you aren't using MIDI at all, Vegas has a problem with it.

My Presonus Studio Live does NOT have MIDI, and I can happily use the ASIO driver.

My NI DOES have MIDI, and I CANNOT use the ASIO driver.

Please note, in NONE of these cases do I have anything checked in the MIDI tab in the preferences dialog.

Vegas is getting tripped up on MIDI in an ASIO driver, even though Vegas is doing nothing with the MIDI.

My main work is in audio, and I use Cubase, WaveLabs, GuitarRig, Traktor, Torq and a half a dozen other audio programs, which also heavily support MIDI. I have NEVER encountered anything like this with ASIO drivers.

Can anyone else confirm that if you have an ASIO device with MIDI, if you use the MS Sound mapper, you are OK, and if you use ASIO, things break.

But at least those of you who have been stuck using real time rendering, should be able to use the MS Sound Mapper, with your ASIO device and get back to regular rendering.

Peace.

Michael

I am using a Tascam 1884 with the ASIO driver and midi mapping for control without any problems. Now I will say it was a real pain to get everything set correctly in Vegas.

I am a Cakewalk Sonar user and it is much more user friendly to setup. I think audio in Vegas is almost an after thought unlike what we are used to in the audio recording world.

But I am wondering why you would map through Komplete. It is more of a sampling playback software than an audio output device. Hence I would think the problem is in trying to use Komplete for something it is not intended for.

Tim,

I am not using Komplete at all.

NI just wanted to make things confusing and named the hardware audio interface the same as the software product as they bundle a lite version of Komplete with it.

But I am only using the hardware interface. It is similar to the AK1, just more ins and outs.

Ok I was referring to your condition 3 scenario. It confused me. But like I said the Tascam was a pain to get setup in Vegas but I am able to use it as a Midi controller while running the asio driver.

I don't remember if I had crashes while working through it, but I think I did.
Goodluck!

edit. You know what I was getting an exception like that for a while. It ended up being a corrupted Tascam driver.

I had same issue. solved by update NI Komplete Audio 6 ASIO driver.

http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=freeupdates

scroll down to Komplete Audio 6 ASIO driver. download .

1. uninstall current driver
2. install the new one
3. plug audio 6

- FYI, Way back when, when Vegas was originally released (by Sonic Foundry), it was an 'audio only' multi-track application, I recall some video editing capabilities were added in V2 or 3
Yes, VP does lack some of the 'usual' (pro) audio features.

I have the same EXACT issue using Komplete 6 with Sony ACID PRO 7.
I've contacted Sony literally 7 times and they've NEVER tried to resolve the problem. Their only answer to every glitch is to RE-INSTALL the program!
I really love Acid Pro when it cooperates but... the time has come.
I'm taking up an offer from Presonus. They'll give me $100 off if I switch to they're DAW, which seems incredible. OH! and FYI, I've spoken with the Sony Tech support manager. He's agreed to give me a full refund after having the program for 5 months now :) Goodbye Sony.

Vegas works fine with other ASIO/MIDI solutions. I'd suggest your problem is the NI ASIO drivers; try updating them as suggested by andyzou.
