Subject:Problem burning CDs with Acid Music Studio 8.0

I submitted my issue to the tech support folks a while back, but I'm not getting any response. Thought maybe someone on the forum could help.

I recently upgraded to a new Dell XPS laptop with Windows 7 64bit after my old XP machine crashed. I was already using music studio 7.0, so I installed it on the new machine. It seemed to work okay initially, but when burning CD's it was having problems. It would burn for a short period of time, and then stop, then star again, etc. Speed would be good while it was working, but then the burning process would stall and sit there for long periods of time. The disk drive is still spinning, but it is not burning. Then it picks up again.

I did some looking online and saw that there might be compatibility issues with version 7.0 and Windows 7 64bit, so I upgraded to version 8.0. However, this did not solve my problem. I can do all the prep work fine, but when it is time to burn a CD, what should be a very short process ends up taking over an hour! It burns about 10%, then stalls for 10 minutes or more, burns another 15%, then stalls again, etc, etc, until the disk is finally done. The disk works fine when it is done, but I am a very busy man and this kind of performance is not acceptable.

I have had no problems burning disks through other programs so I don't believe it is the drive, and the computer is brand new and a workhorse (i7, 8gb Ram) so it should not have any trouble handling anything this program can throw at it. Is this a known issue? And is there a solution? Please help!

Try checking out this KB article to see if anything might apply to your situation.

Did you try cannibalizing the drive in your old system? (Taking the old burner and installing it in your new system.)

Try seeing if a firmware update is available for the (new) burner too. (You might have to roll your sleeves up for this one; a lot of manufacturers aren't very forthcoming on burner specs for some reason. You can usually find out the basics by going into Device Manager.)

I am working on two different laptops, not sure if that is feasible. I tried to check out a firmware update, but it's really left me confused mostly. Apparently for my drive there are a couple of different subsets, and I'm not having any luck figuring out which one I have. Any thoughts?

For what it's worth, the folks at Dell have been incredibly helpful. A guy worked on the issue for about an hour and a half a couple of weeks ago trying to make sure it wasn't a problem with their machine. And they've called me multiple times since then to see if I've had any luck resolving the issue.

Sony, on the other hand, appears to have the most absolutely terrible completely ignore you and not even attempt to back up their product support ever...

To be fair, Sony Creative's answered my support requests (not exactly what I'd call speedy but they do answer.)

Best thing I can think of is to actually take a look at the drive itself; there should be a label with make and model on there somewhere (also possibly with the firmware revision).

If you don't like the idea of opening up your system (or just don't know how), have someone knowledgeable do it for you. Optical drives are very easy to work with.

But you're not even allowed to call them when their product doesn't work without paying them additional money? I mean, seriously? Some folks don't have any comprehension of what customer service is.
