Sony AVC mp4 won't render in V7.0d only MC mp4

I'm trying to render a Sony AVC mp4 file. Unknown error message pops up. I can only render an mp4 with the Main Concept one selected. I'm trying to render a 640x480 SD file for the web. I usually go with wmv, but would like to use this "more efficient" format.
Old Win XP SP3 machine, nothing big running in BG. Other render formats work fine.
Am I missing a setting or codec?
Thanks for any help.

Are you using one of the templates? Try and maybe customize the settings like bitrate and audio. I recall getting errors when I had an audio bitrate it didn't like. Or try a new install of vegas.

I think Main Concept would give just as good as results for what you want anyway, if you just want to go with what works.

I'm "blowing up" DVX100A 16x9 to 1280x720 HD. I've tried most of the options in frame size, audio, etc. in the Sony AVC template window. Even with the default (320x240) a render window appears for a split second, then the "Unknown Error" box pops up.
I re-installed Vegas with no change.
The MC codec gives mediocre results at best. Blockiness, & softness.
The same file in an old version (4.5) of Squeeze, renders a great looking 1280x720 .mp4 picture at the default 1600mbs setting. Think I'll stick with that.

Getting the same problem. Trying to render Internet HD (original is 1920 x 1020 and so is the final format). It starts then gives me a window, "Vegas stopped working," then closes Vegas. Sounds like a bug to me!!

I'm using V7.0d...one of the most stable versions of Vegas. I thought that perhaps I was missing a codec or some other software component. However, when uninstall re-install doesn't work, I'm not gonna waste any more time on it right now.
The reason I wanted to try mp4 in the first place, is the fact that I don't have to make an alternate master (increased saturation, more contrast) as I have to do when making a WMV file for youtube upload. The uprezzed mp4 from Squeeze retains the look of the original, uncompressed avi master.

UPDATE:
In trying to eliminate my old XP SP2 computer from the "SONY AVC/mp4 will not render" problem, I loaded V7 from the original install disk onto my laptop running Windows7 64. Same problem!!
I did not load the media manager on either machine, as it has been reported to cause problems for other Vegas users.
Could it be that the media manager software is actually necessary for the Sony AVC to work??
I find it more than a bit strange that the Sony mp4 renderer would cause the same error on both machines. Curiouser and curiouser...
Anyone using V7.0 without media manager have the Sony AVC working?
Frustrated inquiring mind would like to know.

Not sure, but I thought some of the codecs are hidden in DVD-A installation.
Also, Mainconcept mp4 should give good results, but if I remember right, all the templates in V7 don't use the MAIN profile, they use the BASELINE profile, which I believe is the cheesy profile. That's just from my bad memory, so don't hold me to it. But if the templates are all using Baseline profile, switch to the Main profile and 10 Million bps or 14 million bps should look good. I never render 1080, so I haven't tried that size yet. But 720p Mainconcept looks pretty good to me.
