DQ - MOV to AVI Rendering Recommendations

Got a bunch of .mov clips from client who wants them all in an .avi container. They were all shot in England so they need to go fro PAL to NTSC as well. In addition they aren't all in the same format, so I'm interested to know what others think are the best rendering options.According to VP11 the clips are in the following formats:

720x576x24, 25.000 fps. Apple ProRes 422
48,000Hz, 32Bit (IEEE Float), Stereo, 24-bit Integer

1920x1080x24, 25.000 fps, Apple ProRes 422
48,000 Hz, 32 Bit (IEEE Float), Stereo, 24-bit Integer

1920x1080x24, 25.000 fps, H.264
44,100 Hz, 32 Bit (IEEE Float), Mono, AAC

Suggestions? Must have .avi wrapper, be NTSC ready, and compatible with (I believe) an older version of Premier.

Oh and how do I get that last x24 in the video resolution? Whatever I do in Properties still comes up as the project and preview in x32. Or doesn't that matter?

Thank you,

Jim

Does your client want them in SD or HD resolution?
The easiest thing to do is to drop each one on a timeline and render it out as desired.
As long as you have a recent version of QuickTime on your computer, Vegas can read ProRes files.
Don't worry about the "x24".

Thanks Mike.

I was going to try to preserve the HD. Have to find out what editor he is using for sure and if it is HD capable. I do have a relatively recent version of QT on my computer but it is the free one, not the pro.

Tell me then what is the "x24"? When I was looking at the preview screen the aspect ratio seemed a bit off on the plain PAL stuff. It seemed too tall and skinny, but everything appeared to have all the correct settings in properties except for the "x24".

Hi Mike, fellow editors,

I'm working the other way around. I have a .avi file that came back from color correction and I need to turn it into a .mov as part of deliveries for distribution. I'm not familiar with quick time, so here comes the question... What is the option for having the best quality, regardless of file size?

"regardless of file size" use NONE. lossless, uncompressed. downside is size/playback.
anyone with QT will have no problem reading it... but make sure they know what colorspace the is in.

or

if it's RGB (0-255) PNG is a good choice, it compressed but is still lossless... haven't used the TIFF/TGA variants but they should be good too... dunno if they're compressed or not, but they'd be lossless.

if it's rec709 (016-235) try Avid's free DNxHD. install; then on render output, select QuickTime, then Custom, then under Video format select Avid DNxHD Codec, then Configure and pick the resolution from the drop-down menu. (then save the result as a Custom Template)

i've read there's a Pro Res render option on PC's now, but haven't used it so dunno what it's like.

Thanks robwood, those are a few options I'll keep in mind.

I was trying Veags 12 rendering uncompressed quicktime, but once the render was reaching the end it was freezing on the last frame but it was lasting about 20% to render. Than after a few more hours an error message was saying that the file could not be created.

Any thoughts on what was causing the error message and why the file could not be created?

I just installed build 486 and started a new render.

i'd probably ask if you were rendering to a drive that's FAT or NTFS... make sure its NTFS.

uncompressed 1080p is 6 megs per frame... doesn't take long to go over the 2 or 4 gig limit FAT has; that would prevent the QT from being created.

NOTE
QT renders in Vegas that include audio will skip to 10% pretty quickly, go normal to 75%, then be done pretty quickly again... if it's video-only it goes 0-100 as normal.

ALSO
not likely the cause, but try a different drive for where you render to:
i've had QT refuse to render because SOMEONE ELSE had formatted a drive i was using... i could render AVI to it, but QT wouldn't even start... when i reformatted it myself, QT would then render to it as normal... this has happened to me more than once in the past few years.... but as i said, don't think this is what happened to you.

yes QT can be annoying to work with on PC's.

CAVEAT
i still use Vegas 10... u may wanna shop around for more recent info.
