I'm seeing a lot of models on musiciansfriend.com, and they generally are getting very good reviews, but they are priced like bargain-basement mics (think Apex). Anybody got hands-on experience? Do they hold up or are they as cheap as their price points seem to indicate? Just another Chinese mic, I suspect . . . |

My experience and observation is that they're a fantastic bang for the buck. I have an MXL 1006 that I like. I did the Scott Dorsey mod on it, it now handles higher SPL's, still sounds about the same. The real surprise for me is the 990. Got a pair on super cheap special a while back just out of curiosity. Discovered that for one thing, they work great on trumpet. They work fine on everything else too. Here's some samples of things recorded with a stock 990. Variously tweaked of course. "Believe" - horns and harmony vocals recorded on a 990 http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/3/11/1809238/Believe_remix.mp3 A short sample of the isolated harmony vocals http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/3/11/1809238/harmony.mp3 Some acoustic guitar stuff I found on Vimeo recorded with a 990. The examples are mic'd and eq'd differently, showing different character that can be achieved. http://vimeo.com/2862249 http://vimeo.com/30205057 There are also mods that can be done on the 990 and I believe all the MXL's. I had a pair of MXL-603 (Mogami Edition - about 2cm of magami wire in them - wow !) and everything off-centre sounded like it was going through a phaser. Not any more, and I now have a pair of NT5s..... geoff (and C451s and C535 and MC012) Late edit: this happened with stereo pair and even one single mic ! Not sure about other models,,,, Message last edited on7/10/2012 7:10:47 AM byGeoff_Wood. |
