Hello everyone,

I have only recently bought and installed this programme (I have Windows XP Pro SP3), but everytime I select the command "Extract Audio from CD..." I get the following error, then the program quits:

Import audio CD works with software. Has anybody got any idea about this?

Thanks

First question: are you running SF as Administrator?

Second: any particular reason you bought a 2 versions old version of Soundforge?

Hi,

yes I am always the administrator on my PC.

The reason is that I use Sound Forge sparingly and could not justify spending £££s for it, so I took advantage of a bulk sale on Ebay. What's wrong with that? Besides, I'd understand the problem if I was using the latest Windows version, but SoundForge 8 was released to work with the very version of Windows that I use (XP SP3), so it should be fully compatible.

Like I said, I have no problems importing CD audio with other software, and I wonder if perhaps it is a conflict with some other programme's CD import driver? Maybe there's a conflict with some VST plug-in?

Couldn't be a VST as no VSTs have any bearing on CD Extract, or should even be active at the time.

Try removing the CD drive from Device Manager and reboot to rediscover/reinstall it. Maybe other software has indeed 'customised' the driver or some other related subsystem.

Also check latest drive firmware is installed.

Thanks for your answer. I do have some other software that may be conflicting, one is a suite from Cyberlink (PowerDVD etc.), then a couple more audio editing apps (video and audio) and a number of disc-mastering and backup software. Potentially there's a lot of attention on my CD drive - which by the way is a Blu-ray drive, but I doubt that is the problem. What is strange is that Sound Forge was the last programme to be installed on this machine, so I would imagine it would break previous installs rather than the other way around...

If I uninstall the CD drive, might it break other software installed previously?

I'll check the firmware.

The problem might be the Blu-Ray drive as they weren't released to the public until June of 2006 and SF8 was out before that. Maybe a later release of SF8 has Blu-ray support.

Other software shouldn't affect SF unless you are trying to run that other software at the same time. Don't take this the wrong way but are those other apps you're running legitimate and not from torrent downloads? Also you mention being strapped for cash - not all free apps play nice. You get what you pay for. As to getting SF8 via eBay - I wonder if you got a legit version in original Sony packaging and not something that may have been pirated.

I do have the latest build of SF 8, and I have tried it without any other programme running, same thing.

All of my applications are legitimate. I do have some freeware but very limited. SF8 from Ebay was legitimate since it was a proper, pressed SONY disk with printed serial which registered OK. Just no packaging or printed manual, probably a left-over batch or the remains of some OEM stock.

I will update the drive firmware, but I suspect this must be a conflict with some other proprietary cd driver from another software that is not allowing a SF routine...

Unfortunately because of Sony's activation restrictions I can't install it on another partition/system of the same computer to test it...Or can I?

I just hoped that some of you guys had come across this before.

Thanks for the answers.
