Subject:Can I run two Sound Forge programs on one computer

I have SF 6 installed and I want to know if I buy SF 10 will I be able to have them both installed at the same time (don't ask me why, just a crazy idea), or can I only have one installed at a time and my only option is to upgrade? Thanks.

You can have multiple versions of SF installed on the same PC w/o issue...
However, running them at the same time 'could' cause issues with a single soundcard.. I haven't tried it though. Out of curiosity, what exactly are you trying to accomplish? In my tenure on this forum, we've covered just about every scenario.

I often have the current version and the prior version installed, and often run them simultaneously. There have been a few times i've been recording a live show where the talent expects me to hand them a rough CD as they're packing up. I'll record a song or two in one Sound Forge, then stop and start recording in the other. While the other is recording i'll use the first to do some rough cuts and normalization and save the file. By the time i'm done with that i'll flop to recording again on the first and cutting on the other. They are smart enough to only use either the input or the output section of the audio devices as necessary and not stomp on each other.

I'll also be dropping all the rough cuts onto a Vegas timeline as they're saved.

This way i've got everything ready to start burning the rough CD even while the audience is still applauding and can usually have the first disc done 10 minutes later.

Why you can't have multiple instances of the same version of Sound Forge i just don't know. Seems like it could be really handy.

Yeah, cos you can have multiple instances of Vegas running at same time, no problem....

SF does lack a setting for "Release soundcard when not active application" setting.

And I'm just going to add a final footnote, in case anyone else has this question. I finally figured out how to ask Sony Support this question, (they don't accept questions on previous versions), and they added an important piece of information, and I quote:
Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software. Yes, you can have both programs installed on the same machine. Please note that if you work on a file/project in version 10, you will not be able to later open it in version 6.0 as the files are not backwards compatible.

That only applies to .frg project files, not to audio files. Any audio file you save in any version of Sound Forge can be opened in any other version. Also, i'm not sure when project files were added as a feature of Sound Forge, but it was probably after version 6 so it wouldn't be an issue with 6 anyway.

The project file option was added in 9 or 10. SFpro10 I think

Yup, I just thought I would mention it so people should be aware. I've been hopping .wav and MP3 files back and forward between the two with no problem.
