I'm new to soundforge. I really need some guidence from you wonderful sonic wizards out there. I have a passion for on location perforamce recording , usally using 2 mics pointed at the stage I usually get way up there and the recordings come out sounding great with one exception , the dingle berry yelling into my mics in the hopes of hearing himself at a later date. My question is , using Soundforge , can I edit the volume of the crowd noise without comprimising the quality of the performance ? I would love to hear some great feed back on this , any help would be way cool. |

rednroll is the guy to ask. I suspect there is a slim chance the noise reduction plug in might help, providing the yelling occurs during a quiet moment. Other than that about all you can do is invest in a couple of 15 foot boom poles and keep the mics away from the goofs. If it is any consolation, I have the same problem when shooting news pieces in town: always some twerp wanting to say hi to his mum, right in the middle of an interview. |

PB... You're sending a Newbie with a question about removing vocals from a recording to Rednroll?!? Isn't that like sending sheep into a wolf's den? ;) |

Hey Hey Hey!!, I have no problem with newbie questions as long as they show some kind of initiative and don't show just laziness. I was once an instructor, so I'm use to answering newbie recording questions. Read my reply on the post of "losing tiny sound..." My question to your question first is, what type of microphone setup are you using? You mentioned you are using 2 microphones. There are several micing techniques using 2 mics in recording a live situation. For your instance I would recommend an X-Y stereo micing technique. This is accomplished with 2 matching Mics that pick up with a Cardiode pattern. With this type of micing the placement of the mics are located in the same area (directly together), thus you have the ability to have a billy club in your back pocket and if some drunken bulligerent comes up and tries to scream into the mics, you just pull out your club and knock him out cold. This micing technique also captures the stereo perspective and actually will sound better then if you space the 2 mics apart from each other, because there is no chance of phase cancellation, which happens when using multiple mics. When you space the mics out, you have to patrol 2 areas and of course some idiot is always gonna yell into the mic on the right while your looking at the mic on the left. I did recommend that SF makes a drunken bulligerent filter plugin for Sound Forge just for this scenario, but unfortunately this is not possible yet. Hungry like the wolf :-), Brian Franz (Rednroll) |
