Subject:SoundForge 10 or CD Architect 5.2d?

I'm using SF7 now and wondering if I should upgrade to SF 10. I'm a video guy (VegasPro of course!) and primarily use SF7 to process one channel audio to two channel.
I also have a need to create master CDs with WAV files for duplication. I've got CD Architect 5.2 and wonder if SF 10 would replace CD Architect.
Would appreciate any thougfhts on this.

Not a SF10 user - I stayed at SF9 - but for my CD 'mastering' I use a combo of SoundForge & CD Architect. I do all post-daw processing in SF9 as .wav files and then use CDA to assemble and burn my cd's. The reason I do this two-step is SF lets me run vst's where CDA doesn't and CDA allows better setup and burning of cd's than SF (any version).

Now you could burn cd's from SF but I wouldn't.

Jack.. I have SF8 and CD Architect 5.2 (haven't installed and never used CDA yet!) I am creating an audio book to be replicated for a customer. Will this config work as well as SF9 JUST for making CD Audio WAV files with all the data in the WAV files for end users to see titles, etc? You know like MP3 downloads from Amazon (without CD graphics of course)?

Is CDA a stand alone product? or does it require SF8 or above to operate? I got a new PC and I hate to install unusable software.

CDArchitect5.2 that you already have is exactly same as version which comes with SoundForge8, 9 & 10, so there's no need to purchase any other version!

It can make RedBook CD Master CD with correct PQ codes, Universal Product Codes and ISRC, and also add CDText (Artist, Titles) if you have a burner which supports that; however CDText can only be read by some CD players (mostly Sony).

Although CDArchitect can make a long WAV file which represents the CD in it's entirety, I don't think the file contains Markers and Text for client use; best you just supply your client with an already burnt master CD for duplication.

Yes it works fine as a standalone application.

Same answer (again). SF10 and CDA are different things, albeit with a little overlap. If you want to compile CDs intuitively and with ease, use CDA.

It's not a matter of one OR the other. It is a case of one AND the other - they are not mutually exclusive.

I concur with Christo and Geoff.
Regarding other issues. If you are dealing with mono / spoken word material, there is really no reason to convert a single channel file to two channels before hand, CD Arc will automatically convert it to the proper two channel audio CD format. On a series of long-form spoken word CDs I worked on a few years ago, I created tracks at 10 minute intervals which made it easier for the end user to navigate. It must of coarse be burned in the disc-at-once format to avoid any silent spaces between tracks.

Thanks to all of you for your help. Audio is a separate discipline from my video work!

While CD Architect is now long in the tooth, I'd suggest holding off relying on SF for CD building. It gets buggy if you start moving crossfaded tracks ("events") around, resulting in unexpected gaps.

This has been confirmed by support in May 2011, but it looks like there will be no more updates for Sound Forge 10 so I'm not holding my breath for a fix (at least not for free).

That's news to me Iain; I'm using CDA extensively, and never had that happen..... yet!

Same here, as Christo stated, but I don't use it extensively much these days.

He said that the crossfade things were happening in SF, not CDA.

Yes, the issues I experienced were in Sound Forge not CDA. Unfortunately CDA isn't very useful for me because of the lack of VST support (AFAIK that's still the case, isn't it?).

Here's a series of screenshots (in a PDF) that I sent to Sony support about the CD building issues in SF:

Sadly true, but you can use 'DX-VST-wrappers'.
