Vegas 11 Iris Transition

jaegersing wrote on 3/21/2012, 8:22 AM
I just opened a Vegas 10 project in Vegas 11, and an iris transition is behaving differently. Has this been reported already? I couldn't find it in a quick forum search.

Previously in Vegas 10 the transition (Circle In) had Clip B video on the outside of a shrinking circle which has Clip A video inside it. At the end of the transition Clip A disappears smoothly into nothing and Clip B shows full screen.

Now in Vegas 11, at the start of the transition, the scene changes abruptly to Clip B, then Clip A is seen at the outside of the shrinking circle and Clip B is inside the circle. At the end of the transition, just as Clip B disappears to nothing and only Clip A is visible, there is another abrupt switch back to Clip B showing full screen.

Or am I doing something wrong here?

Richard

I'm sure you're not. But, i've got a few ideas to try in order to track down the problem. It almost sounds like there's a transition envelope that is running backwards. Try adding one (or check to see if one exists) and reverse it.

Also, try adding a new iris transition inside 11 and see if that works. If it does, remove the errant transition and replace it. It's possible that 11 is somehow misinterpreting the way 10 wrote the transition into the .veg file.

Try to turn off the GPU rendering, it has run havoc many other FX functions...

Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried adding and reversing the transition envelope, but it sort of converts it to a Circle Out instead of Circle In. I also tried applying a new transition and it behaved the same way as the original one.

I got around the immediate problem for this project by changing to a different type of transition, so there is no real urgency any more. But it would be nice to see this resolved if possible.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I will take at look at the GPU thing tomorrow, although it's highly likely my graphics card doesn't support GPU rendering anyway.

I'm sure there are many more examples, but something similar to your problem happened to me:

I can see the wisdom of keeping legacy versions of Vegas installed because of issues like this. Vegas doesn't always play nicely with itself.

Hi Richard,

It sounds to me like you have inadvertently duplicated an event on the Timeline. It's happened to me before. Try this: Right-click the track header for the video track containing the transition, and choose Expand Track Layers. This will give you a detailed look at the events making up the transition.

Does it look like this?

Or like this?

If it looks like the second image, then my suspicion is correct. Simply delete the small event in the B lane, and you should be in good shape. Let us know if this doesn't do the trick.

Thanks again for the responses.

I created a totally new project in Vegas 11, with just 2 clips of solid color, one white and one blue. I added an Iris Circle Out transition between the clips and it works perfectly. When I change the transition parameters to Circle In, the problem described earlier appears again. I also tried it with different shapes and they are behave the same.

I also checked that GPU is set to Off.

So it looks like the upgrade to Vegas 11 has broken the Iris In transitions, but if anyone has any other suggestions I am happy to try them.

That's strange Richard - I just did one in Build 595 and it worked exactly as always.
Maybe it's something to do with opening a V10 project in V11, where the transition was not previously OFX.

Have you tried applying a new transition in V11, then making sure that the Direction is set to Iris in?

I have the same problem as Richard when the direction is set to "iris in" with vp11.
No problem with vp10

Aha - just looked to find a point of difference...

When GPU acceleration is ON it behaves as it always has.

When it's OFF, it does what Richard described in the first post, so that's the difference.

I'm seeing the same thing as Richard. Here's my workflow.

1) Open Vegas 10
2) Add two media generated solid color events to the timeline
3) Overlap the events.
4) Drag the Iris - Square,In, Center Preset to the transition.
5) Change the shape from Square to Circle.
6) Save the V10 project.
7) Open the Project in Vegas 11

Here's my Vegas 10 Project: Iris-CircleIn-V10.veg

Here's the example (pardon the weak attempt at humor).

btw, this was done on my laptop - no GPU acceleration.

Good illustration Jerry

So, this seems to confirm....

No GPU acceleration = weird behaviour

GPU acceleration ON = everything in the garden is rosy, well iris transitions at least.

Thank you everyone. I am seeing incorrect results with certain presets as well. We will look into this.
