1.5 hours wav file weirdness

JHendrix wrote on 2/23/2012, 9:31 AM
so i did a timeline render - 1.5 hours wav file so i could give it to an audio guy to do dialog work

the file itself became inaccessible in windows explorer and i cant delete it. trying to open the folder it is in just times out (the progress bar in the file path just keeps going and going). the other files in the same folder work fine.

Try rebooting. If that doesn't work, reboot in safe mode.

For that length of file, flac files are half the size with lossless compression, and pretty much universally as useable as wavs. I use flacs instead of wavs almost always.

did not work...tried renaming the file in safe mode and system folder just timed out

If you have another computer on the same network, you could try using that to delete the file.

solved: i had to take full ownership then delete!

this was probably because i had initially rendered to a mac system drive so the permissions got mixed up.

i guess i will have to now render this file in smaller pieces

by the way, anyone know if doing a time, line render of low rez video to use while doing the audio work will also cause problems if it is too long?

Nice little freeware called "Unlocker" which helps get rid of pesky corrupted files which will not delete.

Sound like a disc error in that file.

** Late edit - OK I see it wasn't !

fwiw i ended up re-rendering the audio in smaller pieces. so far it works but vegas is quite buggy with the long wav files in the timeline.

How big was this rendered file? A standard .WAV file can only be up to 2 gigabytes.

in this case i have 2 projects:

day one: project is 1.5 hours long . tried rendering full length which yielded a file of about 1.5 GB and had tons of issues in vegas and on the system level. then tried half the timeline and was getting drop outs in my renders. finally did it in 4ths and it worked without dropouts.

day two: is only 20 minutes and i had no issues whatsoever

another twist was this was all around the time i was renaming some bus tracks in vegas which is also BUGGY!!!

for your info

A .wav file cannot exceed 2.1GB = 2,097,136KB = 2,147,466,290bytes

maximum times (@25fr):
01:02:08:06 @96kHz/24bit-STEREO
02:04:16:12 @96kHz/24bit-MONO
02:04:16:12 @48kHz/24bit-STEREO
04:08:32:24 @48kHz/24bit-MONO

However it's wise not to get too close to those limits as not every application can make or open them.

e.g. Soundforge can open above, but Max length Soundforge can save is less = 01:02:07:19 @96k24b-STEREO

That's another cool thing about .flac. Since it is half the size, you don't run into this issue until the file is twice as much recorded time.
