timeline / editing performance (not preview)

JHendrix wrote on 2/17/2012, 7:27 AM
so it seems that from time to time i will suddenly get what i describe as "kludgy mouse" in the vegas timeline. meaning if i click from one location to another in the timeline there is a maddening 0-2 second delay. it is usually more of a delay if i click on a clip and - when this behavior is happening, dragging clips and other normal edits are slower.

in the past it seemed to be ties to a system update, where once i rolled the update back the issue went away.

anyhow, barring rolling back the system and other such voodoo tactics anything i can do to address this behavior?

well i seem to have confirmed agian that rolling back an update brought back timeline / editing performance

i rolled this update back:

http://tinypic.com/m/fbyxps/1

the thing that is frustrating is it say the updates are "critical" but to keep editing without the bug i cant install them

anyone ever run into this? i dont like wondering if not installing the update leaves me open.

I've had updates occasionally FUBAR my windows install. It seems if you don't install them all when you get them (ie selectively install) the odds of having something go wrong later with an update install increase.

Just my experience, your mileage may vary.

right kind of a paradox. in this case i am tlalking only about vegas editing / mouse in the timeline performance being hit after the update...

maddening since unless i want to go offline completely I need the os updates!

I am working on the latest build of Vegas 11, trying to come up with the steps to re-create a bug that is very similar to what you are reporting. In my case, with 100 AVCHD 60p clips (from Sony CX-700V) on the timeline, I initially get 59.94 fps playback, even in Best Full preview. However, all of a sudden, usually within about 30-60 seconds of clicking on the timeline to move the playhead (similar to what you are doing) the playback suddenly drops to about 20-30 fps. It stays there even after I change preview to Preview Auto.

I can "cure" the problem by quitting Vegas, then re-starting, and opening the same project.

I have submitted a trouble ticket, but I unfortunately cannot come up with a specific set of steps to re-create the problem, other than what I described above.

John,
one thing I've noticed is Vegas can start "ErrorReportLauncher"and leave it running.
Terminating it via Task Manager may free things up for an ongoing easy editing experience.

As I continue to try to isolate the cause, I'll remember to check Task Manager from now on.

John,

You may be completely aware of this, but Windows 7 allows you to launch the Resource Monitor from the Task Manager. The resource manager gives you much more info about the selected process than Task Manager alone and may-or-may-not help diagnose your "problem".

"clicking on the timeline to move the playhead (similar to what you are doing) the playback suddenly drops to about 20-30 fps"

i am not talking about playback,

only this:

the time it takes from when i click the mouse in the timeline - to the time the play head location is updated (not playing and - having nothing to do with playback)

when this happens, dragging clips is also slower and TIMELINE performance (not playback) is sluggish.

johnmeyer wrote on 2/18/2012, 4:03 PM
i am not talking about playback, Yes, I understand that our two problems are not exactly the same, and that's what I said above. However, I was trying to suggest that perhaps there is a similar underlying cause.

If the cause is similar, here is something you can try: only put a few events on the timeline and see if you can get the same problem to happen. In my case, if I only put a few AVCHD 60p clips on the timeline, I cannot get the problem to happen. It only happens when I have many dozen (close to a hundred in my test case).

I realize that if you get positive results when you only put a few events on the timeline that this is not a very useful workaround. However, if it does stop the problem from happening, then I suggest that you document this and send it to Sony tech support. This will help them find and fix the problem.

I see exactly this problem a lot. Pretty certain you do need more that a couple of clips on the T/L to invoke it.
Reducing the number of thumbnails and zooming the T/L out seems to help which maybe a clue to what is happening. I see this in V9.0e and later. I suspect Vegas is having to refresh the screen buffer.
Not exactly a show stopper but it certainly is one of the things that makes editing with Vegas a less pleasant experience than it could be.

how do you reduce number of thumbnails other than zooming out?
Marco. wrote on 4/24/2012, 5:33 PM
Options/Preferences/Video - a selection which should be called somewhat like "Show thumbnails in Events" (sorry, don't have an English Vegas version available).
