'The Miracle' was right. Windows XP and CD Architect

For all of you who attacked The Miracle on his (and I believe someone else's) solution for running windows Xp and CD Architect. He was right. I did, too.

To be a little more clear though, here's what you do.

Download the windows xp "Application Compatibility Toolkit".

Run the QfixApp program. When QfixApp opens:
-Click browse and select your Forge32.exe program.
-check windows 98.
-Click run

When Sound Forge opens, open CD architect. You will be prompted with a screen offering a registry fix. Click OK. (if a pop up says you don't have access rights to edit the registry, ignore it, go back to your Qfix window, click advanced and "create fix support". This will patch the registry.

REBOOT!

Go to Accessories (start menu) and select the Program Compatability Wizard.
Click 'next'
Click manually select program and then 'next'
Click browse and again select your Forge32.exe file.
Click 'next'.

Forge will open, now open cd architect.

In the background you will see that the program compatabiity tool is still open and now it's offering to save these settings permanantly.

Make sure the permanent setting is checked and click 'next'

Now you'll find that CD Architect works perfectly!

It works - I had been trying for many hours to make it work. If you follow the instructions and your burner is mmc compliant this will work.

This indeed works well. I followed it exactly as it was posted and it worked perfectly.

Excellent Lounge Lizzard, now I can have all of my SF apps installed and working in XP(CD Architect was the only one I had not been able to install).

Now, when you say Sound Forge, are you referring to the newest version 5.0? (BTW, I'm not sure if SF4.5 will run on XP.)

When You Say Sound Forge %.0 The Newest Version, You Are Not Talkin About Cd Architect? Right? (N)
atedee wrote on 10/30/2001, 10:27 AM
What I'm trying to say is installing Soundforge 5.0 and CD Architect 4.X as plug-in.
Can it be done? I have SF 5.0 but I don't have CD Architect. I can still buy CDA cheap in a local shop. However, I don't wanna do it if the two programs can't work in w2k pro.

for what it's worth, I've followed the instructions exactly, and it still won't recognize my ide burner. Nothing shows in the list. I even restored an earlier Ghost image that was taken before SF4.5 was ever installed just to make sure the registry changes hadn't been attempted yet.

Anyone else have a solution? I'm really missing CDA at this point.

For what it's worth, you may want to try CDPBurn. If your drive is really MMC compliant, you shouldn't have any problems. It also works fine under XP without compatibility modes.

Did you reboot after applying the qfix? You need to do that before starting the compatability mode.

If you get a message saying you don't have rights to the registry, ignore it. Close the window and apply the patch from inside the qfix 'advanced' panel.

Reboot and then use compatability mode.

ps this works with a plextor drive for sure. I've also renistalled xp and reapplied. It works for me everytime.

Good luck

The two programs are not compatible. CDA only works with 4.5 which is completely xp friendly.
SeanC wrote on 11/2/2001, 3:42 PM
I want to make sure I get the order proper.

1. Run Q Fix App
2. Tell Qfix to open sf4.5
3. SF Runs and when you select CDA, it asks if you want it to make the registry work with CD recorders, you say yes.
4. You Close SF and Qfix app.
5. Now go to properties on SF4.5 and tell it to be win 98 compatible?

somewhere in there you reboot, where?
thanks!

Sean,

Between steps 4 and 5 you reboot. Then set up the win98 compatability.

If you receive an error message when you try apply the fix ("no priveledges to edit registry" - or such) ignore it and apply the patch from the qfxapp window (click advanced - "fix". Exit Sound Forge after you've applied the fix and not before. If you do it before it doesn't work. You should probably create an xp restore point first.

SF 5 and cd architect are not compatible at this time

I really appreciate you posting this info, but for some reason it's not working for me.

I do indeed get the error message ("IDE/ATAPI drives disabled in registry settings") and when I click on YES I get the message you say to ignore - "changes to aspi settings can not be made - You do not have suff. privileges to modify this setting". At this point, should I click "Okay" and exit Sound Forge and CD-A or REALLY ignore this error message and then just...

>> REBOOT! Go to Accessories (start menu) and select the Program Compatability Wizard.

Should I also re-open QFixApp? I haven't been doing this - just opening the compatability wizard.

>>Click 'next' Click manually select program and then 'next' Click browse and again select your Forge32.exe file. Click 'next'. Forge will open, now open cd architect.

At this point is where the problem comes in. We're right back to the same error messages I got in the very beginning. CD-A isn't allowing me to get to any ATAPI drives.

Even though I get the error messages that second time, I still went ahead and followed all the above instructions exactly - just in case it somehow only "worked" after folloing these last steps. Still no joy.

My burner is a new Acer 8X4X32, and is compliant. It was working just fine before I installed XP.

Any suggestions or thoughts on how to fix this or telling me what I'm doing wrong would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

"changes to aspi settings can not be made - You do not have suff. privileges to modify this setting"

Look at this error message as though CD Architect is generating it.

Click ok or cancel but do not exit sound forge.

Click on the qfix window (as my posting clearly states!) click advanced and click 'apply fix'

Now close Sound Forge - Reboot - Now make the program win 98 compatable and that's it.

I don't mind posting fixes and discussions but please read the instructions and follow carefully. They are written correctly.

You may have a problem now that you tried to make the corrections but didn't.

I hope you set a restore point or you've got a ghost image of your hard disk (which is the simplest way of hoing back)

Good luck

Lounge Lizard, thanks for replying. I do indeed have restore points, and we're talking about a new XP install here - and even though I went through it with all of your messages / instructions right in front of me today (on a FRESH install) I still get the exact same situatioon arising.

Again, I was denied access to do the registry fix from within Sound Forge / CD-A. I did NOT exit those programs, but went back to the (still open) QFix window, and pressed Advanced and Create Fix just as you said. Nothing seems to change in the QFix advanced window (right hand side of the screen).

At this point in your instructions, you say to reboot. Okay, I'm making an assumption here, and I'm sure you're going to think I'm still an idiot for "not following your instructions exactly", but I assume that after hitting "create fix", you're supposed to save and exit out of QFix BEFORE rebooting, correct? In any event, that's what I did.

Then I rebooted, then launched Prgm Compat. Wizard, selected Forge 32, it opens and I open CD-A. Once again, I get the same error message as before about IDE/ATAPI cd-r drives being disabled in the registry.

Question: Are you using a SCSI or IDE Plextor? Is it possible that this fix only works with SCSI drives?

Has anyone else out there successfully done this proceedure with a IDE/ATAPI CD drive?

I don't mean to question your methods, and I really do appreciate your assistance. I'm not trying to be a pain, and I AM trying to follow your directions EXACTLY as you typed them. I appreciate any additional suggestions you may have.

Thanks again for your help.

Ok, ok. I'll stop busting your chops.

Firstly, I am running ide/plextor. I too was met with the popup announcing I don't have access to the registry. (ps. On another clean installation of xp it actually did give me rights!!! No idea why that is as both were from a clean install).

When you open Qfixapp "browse" to forge32.exe. Now select "Win98" as your layer. Now click "run". Now open CD Architect. Now you get your window re IDE/ATAPI. If you get the confirmation that your fix was applied, good, if not, go back to your Qfixapp, click "advanced". Now click "create fix support".

U won't get confirmation of a registry fix or anuything. Now close QfixApp. Close Sound forge and any windows. Reboot. When your back up go to your compatability mode and select win98. That will do it.

If you still have the same problem then it's most likely because you didn't complete the process correctly and the registry has now been altered but not the way you wanted.

It is important that you when you open cdarchitect (after starting it with QfixApp) that you get the IDE/ATAPI popup. If not, you need to start with a clean install, a system restore might do it but hopefully you've made an image of your drive with an app like "ghost".

FYI. It took my an enormous amount of time to make this work (atleast to find a way to make it work!) but it does work.

Good luck.

Post when you've had success!!!:)

i do not understand you peoploe???????????!!!!!!!!!!!, why do not you JUST INSTALL Power DVD ver 3.0 OEM, that will fix all your ide atapi problems.
philokeefe wrote on 11/7/2001, 4:29 PM
Well, since I have tried just about everything else I can think of, I D/L the 30 day demo of it last night and installed it. It STILL isn't working for me.

I'm going to try yet another clean install tonight... wipe the HDD, reinstall XP, and all software one friggin' step at a time. and Then follow these CD-A instructions (from printouts of these messages) EXACTLY. If that doesn't work, it's CDP Burn.
