How much $$$$ are you prepared to invest? Lots of options.
Definitely the way to go is 24 bit/ 96kHz.
Search the forum for "sound card" and you should find some help there.
I have the Echo Mia and I'm happy with it. I'm not a pro however, so maybe I won't hear certain limitations they might hear.

Hope this helped.

Later.

I can tell you offhand that with my Audiophile 2496 via S/PDIF out using 24-bit playback in ACID Pro, it's buckets better than my SB Live! card.

You'd definitely get the same results with the Mia as well. Both are relatively inexpensive options.

I would recommend the echo mona sound card...It is actually the one that I will be picking up soon. I have a echo layla with 8 inputs and 10 outputs, 20 bit model. The Mona works great for me because it has 4 universal inputs[ie: you can plug an xlr mic cable or a quarter inch instrument cable as well]. High quality mic preamps built in....etc....you'll see at the web site...www.echoaudio.com. If that is too much money for you then the gina model might suite you better. Later.

I recommend Sound Blaster Audigy EX if you can afford it. I have gone all digital including optical ins/outs to my board and FX racks

If you search for "audigy", you'll see it's not really recommended for audio work. The 24 bit capability is misleading. It seems it is 24 bit only for listening, not recording.
