Subject:Recording problems with SF and Echo Darla WDM

I have an ECHO Darla 20 card, and run windows 2000 (SP2). On my two boot systems I have SoundForge 5.0d installed, but on one system I use the ECHO WDM 0.66.4 beta drivers, and on the other I use the NT 1.60 drivers.

Forge doesn't work right on the WDM system. At Darla settings, ie, 16 bit, 44.1 kHz, when I record I get a 5 second lag, with 5 seconds of material chopped at the end. Recordings less than 5 seconds vanish. When ready to record, the meters respond like normal, until I hit record. Then, they lag by 5 seconds.

At non-Darla settings, ie, 24bit, 96 kHz, I don't get lag, but the sound is chopped to peices. Digital noise all over the shop. Meters work fine.

Forge seems to be able to play fine at any setting.

Anyone have a fix for this? Any ideas?

Use the v5.06 driver, which isn't a WDM driver and prey that it works under win2k? Send Echo an email, they usually get back to you within a couple of days, and probably already know this is an issue, thus the driver is still a "Beta", but that would be the place to start.

I've been talking to echo, and they always reply very promptly. I was just wondering whether this was a problem known to anyone else. I just have the slightlest inkling that the problem may not be due only to the card drivers.

I have 2 Gina20's installed on a Win98 machine and have not had this problem with 5.0d. But I was interested in your post since my next step is to goto Win XP and use the WDM drivers. Let us know if you figure it out.

Well, with the NT drivers 1.60, everything works ok, but latency is high. With the WDM beta 0.66.4, Cakewalk Sonar seems OK, Acid is Ok, I think. I have made major system changes over the last week and haven't tried acid lately. But SF, which I do all my editing with, preforms really bad.

I use SF 4.5 (5.0 soon) and Sonar on a Win 2K system. I've been having some intermittent problems with Gina20 on the same .664 beta drivers (audio would stop playing within any windows app). But specifically with SF, I have been experiencing the same issues as yourself. For starters SF 4.x or 5, I believe does not support WDM. Secondly, there are some issues with the beta (like the one I mentioned) as well as it not being mult-client. Maybe if/when SF becomes WDM capable, some issues could be cleared up. The only workaround I've heard and tried with mixed results, would be to lock the sample rate from within the Echo Console. Supposedly this option should only be used for Non-WDM applcations. If SF's Tech Support can let us know when their apps will be WDM compliant...that would be nice, especially due to the release of Win XP?!?!?

Wow! I am surprised to hear this. I'd originally thought that the problems were with the ECHO beta drivers, and I had been sending a lot of info to ECHO but hadn't yet said anything to Sonic Foundry. Funny thing is, I was always much happier with SF4.5. Even when using the non-WDM NT drivers, SF5. doesn't _feel_ as good as 4.5. I guess I used to trust 4.5 completely, but now with the audio problems that I am having, for whatever reasons, I don't feel like my audio apps are as trusty. I guess that is a funny thing to say, but thats how it seems.

I'll try locking the sample rate and see how I go. Thanks for the confirmation too. I appreciate it!

Recording delay/loss is because of too large record buffer setting.
Set buffer to lowest level and it will solve the problem.
I had this same problem until a very helpful tech at Echo Audio set me straight (I'm using Darla24 with Win2000).
