Subject:mixing music and sound, background music..

hey guys,

I am going to be working on a chess comedy-video and wondering what are some simple and effective ways of mixing music clips with basic audio/speech clips?

I want a little background music going on at times during the video.

I know you can simply import the music clips and add them to the audio or music timeline and they can play at once, but what do you recommend for a nice balance between the two? You should be able to hear the speech and also some of the music without either one drowning out the other hopefully I know-but are there some ways to do this effectively besides simply adding your music and adjusting your clip volume?

Like say I take my music and pan it hard left or right to one side in any audio software. Export it as such and then add it to the timeline? Would that make it more distinct and clear and less muddy? just wondering. Not used to trying to mix down two different audio sources that overlap one another. Like in mixing music, I generally know where my audio is-say I have vocals panned in the center, bass a little off-center, guitar panned to the right 4 or 5%, etc... With an audio clip recorded from a cheap cam mic-it's all just spread out over the stereo spectrum as far as I know. So mixing that audio with music and making it sound good is new to me.

Not looking for anything overly complex to do-surround sound or whatnot.

Might just try to take the music-leave it as is and adjust the volume on the music clip (after adding to the video timeline) to make a reasonable balance between the two-to taste.

I do know that spacing/panning can make a big difference in audio quality though and that's kinda why I'm asking on what one could do here. Like what if I took the audio clip-panned it to the right 50% or hard right(all the way) in the audio software-Soundforge, Cakewalk, whatever and saved it as such and re-imported back into the video software and took the music-panned it 50% to the left and placed it back in the movie studio 11. Don't want muddy sound basically.

Typically music is stereo, (left and right) if mixed to only one side (or the other, it would be distracting,. Even in a 5:1 mix the music is stereo.. unless was mixed in surround to begin with, or in a concert type production, where ambient sound, reverb and/or some audience tracks could be added to the rear surround speakers.
Dialog is 99.99% placed dead center.. Stereo or 5:1
