I have a royal free backgound music I want to add to a video.
Is there a way to make it fit to the length of the video?

What I have done is add video on thimeline and then click insert audio track below the video track. Then I imported my music to project media and drag it the audio track and streched it to fit the lenght of the video. It play the audio file.

I had a program before that automatic fit the music to the length of the video, it made the start, middle and end
points

"Is there a way to make it fit to the length of the video?"

No musician here but probably qualified enough to say no.
Music needs to be composed to fit, oftenly it's more involved than just the right length, you may desire elements within the music to match what is happening with the vision and dialog. Music is a vital part of the whole, not something just tacked on to fit, generally...

You might be thinking of SonicFire Pro from Smartsound. Here the music is madeup of short segments and beginning and end elements that can be joined as need to achieve a desired length. In addition they are now offereing multilayered music so that you can mix the music to suit the video.

There are several ways to approach this.

Sony have a program called Cinescore which allows you to specify duration and several other parameters, but as you already have royalty free background music, it isn't hard to cut and paste to fit to a particular length, without detectable join points.

How far are you out? If you like, you can email the music you have to me (see my profile) and tell me exactly what duration you require. If you can't send attachments through this site, then write to me and I will email you my address, or you may be able to upload so I can download.

One hazard with this approach is that the music may not necessarily "swell" or diminish when your video needs it to, but if it's just generic background music this may not be a problem.

This is a three-step process.
1) Make a rough edit of the video; approximate the duration within a minute or so.
2) Select a piece of music that is approximately the duration of the video.
3) Edit the video to fit the music, not the other way around. With some practice, you can time the cuts and transitions to phrase points in the music.

Here's an example I did last autumn:

If the music is too long .. one trick is to set the music to END when the video ends. You then cut off the start of the music .. and fade in very gradually when the video starts.
