Subject:Will 5.0 work under win98?

ok, I installed a demo version of 5.0 on my Win98/scsi system only to have it go to hell and two motherboard/cpu's/hard drives later, reinstalling formating more time than I can count, trying win2K (kept crashing) I am now back to my original configuration before my crash and using SF4.0. Of course in the mean time I went out and bought 5.0 thinking the demo was the cause, well i installed 5.0 on the Win2k system only to have it keep crashing while working on files. Should I even attempt to install 5.0 on this system or should I just go back to 4.0 where I was safe and at least everything worked? |

First, which is it you're having trouble with, Win98 or Win2k? You can run 4.5 and 5.0 on the same machine. There must be something else wrong with your machine(s) because I ran the demo on two Win98 machines without a single problem and I currently run 5.0 on a Win98 machine. What other software do you have installed on your machine? Also, where are people getting the idea that 5.0 won't run on Win98? It doesn't make sense. SF would have to be crazy not to make 5.0 non-compatable with it. |

I've tried it on Win98 and Win2K without success. Now that I got my system working again with win98 and SF4.0 I'm hesitant about installing 5.0. Right now the machine is stripped and only the windows programs and SF exist. This machine is used only for audio remastering and cd burning, so it's always very stripped. It also has a SCSI subsystem; adapter, HD, CDrom and CD-RW. the other software I will be installing is Plextor 2000 & 96, CDRwin and CDex and CueSheet Editor and Maybe DartPro32 or 98 |

It's time to contact SF support. What exactly does 5.0 do or not do when you attempt to use it? Do you get a GPF or a blue screen? |

5.0 may or may not work under Win98. We recommend (and support) Win98SE, but not Win98. You might uninstall SF 5 and install from our 5.0d update (which is the full installer). |

How can Win98 NOT be recommended if Win98SE is? That does not make sense! You would never know it from my setup. But then, I download all of the updates from Microhell's website. Perhaps I have just enough update to make my version of Win98 suitable for running SF 5.0. |

Makes sense just the same way Vegas is not supported under Windows 98 and is supported under Windows 98SE and is documented under their system requirements. Both Sound Forge and Vegas state that it is not supported under Windows 98. You can still unstall them, but they don't gaurantee the functionality of them. Obviously there was upgrades and the programmers of SF took advantage of using those upgrades. Just like it is now required to upgrade to DX 8.0 to run Sound Forge and Vegas. Is it making more sense now? |

98 and 98se are different operating systems (leave it to Microsoft) you can't update your 98 to become anywhere near 98se. The simpliest way to check what version you have is right-click 'my computer' [ on your desktop ] and click 'properties' and look what it reads under system. It will say 'Second Edition' right after 'Microsoft Windows 98' if it is 98se. All OS's before XP have been taken off the shelf. You still may want to try for an upgrade package at your more 'warehouse' type dealers who I notice have not heeded to Microsoft's commands and have left previous systems and upgrades for sale. |

You might be able to upgrade to SE from Win98 doing an update. I'm not definite about this. The better way to check, although in most cases you are correct it will say, "Second Edition" under your system properties, but I think if you do an update it might not update that info, but it will update your Build number. My build for win98 SE is "4.10.2222 A". If your build is later than that, than it's quite possible you're running 98 SE. I'm not definite about this, I'm sure it's somewhere in that Microsoft huge FAQ section though, if anyone feels like searching. |
