Subject:"Hiss" in my recordings (SF 4.5)

I am recording midi files created by Finale (a music notation software), but the recording has a lot of hiss on it. I have a SB Live "Value" card ( not the real SB Live, but the one that comes with Dell computers. The sound card has been replaced but the hiss remains! This is probably NOT a Sound Forge problem, but I am hoping somebody may have an idea how to get rid of the hiss! Here are some clues (1) on the SB Live card there is a diagnostics program which allows you to test the "record" function. It records fine as long as my music notation software is not running, but it records with hiss when it is running. (2) the Sound Blaster guys had me turn off SF and Finale. I recorded both a wav file and a midi file that existed on my machine already. I recorded them with Windows Sound Recorder. Both recordings had hiss. (3) the record and play volume levels seem to be fine and I've tested recording at 50% and 95% on the volume scale with no difference in hiss, so I do not think it is a signal to noise problem. SF is set to play and record using the SB Live devise. Dell blamed the card, but it has been replaced and the hiss is still there. Sound Blaster blames the music notation software, but I get hiss even with other midi files. Help! Anybody! |

Dump the Soundblaster and get a decent card. Look at stuff from m-audio, aadvark or creamware. The SB is really quite crap (I use one for crap monitoring so I know. It is noisy and doesn't record even waves always. Hope this helps, Isaac |

Try adjusting volume control properties. If you have a little speaker icon on the bottom right, click on it using the right-click and open volume controls. There is one set for regular playback and one for recording.[Options>properties>record] toggle on/off all but the ones you need. The most common form of hiss is when you finished using a mic but did not mute it in these properties afterwards. http://come.to/sblive <--for pre Audidy SB live cards to get latency down to 8ms (done by third party) SB doesn't suck that much. Also get rid if SB dos drivers. This will also speed up your start time in windows. Go to 'add\remove panel' and click on the SB. It will eventually give you a choice of what to uninstall. |
