Anybody else missing the old Render As dialog?

Streamworks Audio wrote on 11/4/2011, 12:17 PM
Just out of curiosity.... not that this is a show stopper bug or anything.... but how many here preferred the old Render As dialog?

The new one is usable... I just preferred that I can select a file type (AVI, MOV etc) then hit custom right away to go in and customize the settings. Now you have to load a preset and then go into the custom settings page.

Then again... maybe it's just me ;-)

It's still there isn't it? You just have to select 'custom' for a given codec selection.

I hate it, if I click match programme settings it removes mpg2.
A huge leap backwards.
The old one was just fine, this one really annoys me.

I definitely preferred the old one. It was designed similar to all the standard Windows dialogs, so it was easy to use. The new one looks too fancy and is confusing.

The one reason I switched from Premiere to Vegas was that it does not try to create its own fancy user interface but uses the standard Windows interface. I hate software that tries a non-standard interface, especially if it just uses one unchangeable tiny font size as if we were still using EGA monitors, and forces a black background on me, and things like that. That is why I use Vegas.

I hope this is not a sign of them abandoning Windows standard interfaces. If they do, I will be forced to write my own NLE.

The ability to access the custom settings is fine. But what I personally find annoying is that we have to select a preset first, then click on custom and go in to change all the settings where as the old dialog you could select a file format (type) and then hit custom right away without have to select a preset. And in the old dialog we could select 'Default Template' which would change the settings to match the project, which made setting customs a quicker start.

Like I say this is not a deal breaker.... still works - just prefer the old work flow better. Perhaps if they added the "Default Template" option to each file type that would be a start.

I love it!

Once you get a template the way you want you click on the little star next to it and add it to your favorites. Then when you want to render you click to show favorites only and you get there real fast. It will be on the favorites only from the time on unless you change it.

Also makes it easier to find types of renders.

The new dialog is much, much faster and easier than the old one!

Just take a few moments to setup your favorites and from then on it is extremely easy and fast. One of those not so great first impression type of things but once you work with it a little bit you will wish it were there much sooner!

Looked worse to me at first but once I got it figured out which takes little effort then I discovered I would never want to go back to the old one.

Yep, once you've set up your favourites it's much better than the old.

Like any new UI it takes some getting used to. I kept clicking on the file location/name to rename the file. I've learned to just use the browse to do it.

Because I output for some very regular clients, I now have favourite presets. It cuts on the hunt and seek/twirl-down to find what I'm after.

I also like the expanded "more search options" for audio only templates etc.

I started out neutral, but with the adjustment period I'm warming to it. At this point, if it changed back, I'd have to re-readjust to the old way.

they could add the new functions on the old one... ;)

I don't feel strongly about it, but I guess I like the old one better.

I do wish SCS would restore the Default Templates, however.

"not that this is a show stopper bug or anything"

It is a show stopper and it is infested with bugs.

Change frame size, don't save, description says one thing, actual frame size parameters are empty.

Even if the stupid thing worked properly why would I want an ever increasing list of things to choose from, I rarely encode using the same parameters. The old way was functional and quick to use. The new way is just dumbed down for the kiddies but they're going to be even more confounded. At best half baked just so the dev manager can can tick something off for marketing while in reality the product has gotten worse.

I loath it. It seems back-to-front , well, bottom-to-top , and works against anybody trying to fluidly render to multple formats.

The idea of Favorites is fine, and would be handy for many. For me however I have vast different formats I need to render to that might not always be a preset I would use. Thus the start from Default Template would be good. If they add it back in then it is a win win - those that like favorites/presets still ahve them - those that like to manually enter our render settings each time have that ability to do so easier than it is now.

I am old school... as an audio engineer I am not a big fan of presets for audio processing tools either ;-)

I am neutral on this, I think i like it. At first sight i thought it was awful, codecs kept dissapearing and my favorite selections had a life of their own. But after build 425, things seem better. Now its growing on me. I do use favorite templates most of the time (about 5 main goto's) so maybe thats why i can live with it. Totally understand why some dont like it though, if you're not using templates much, better off with a default start dialog and enter your values from there. Could Sony add that too?

I got caught today - rendered a project for DVD, then when I opened DVDArchitect and tried to create a Scene Selection Menu, I found I hadn't specified "Save Markers with file ..." - because this option is now only visible once you click on an options button, whereas it was there all the time previously.

I won't get caught again, but for me progress is simplicity, not obscurity.

Peter, so you won't have to re-render your project, download (right-click on the link) and run the script at at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20488019/dvdachapterfromvegasmarker.js
I tested it in Pro8, 9 and 10 and it works in all of them.
Go back into DVDA afterward and click on the "Load Markers" icon.

Yeah, I'm NOT happy with the new window. I get that a lot of folks like it and that's fine but I wish we could choose between Vegas Classic or Vegas New. I render to many different formats and the new set-up forces me to work backwards (or it seems that way).

I'm also lamenting the (apparent) loss of multi-channel mono renders (see my thread here: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=784055&Replies=0).

At first I didnt like it, but now I love it! It makes setting up custom templates much faster to work with. And, I love the new Vegas Pro 11 (with it's new titler and all) much better than Vegas 10 Pro too - works much better on my systems. Thanks SCS!
