No camera preview when print-to-tape - HELP

Rodd_Harris wrote on 10/3/2001, 8:25 AM
Hello,

I'm a definite newbee when it comes to this video stuff so it's very likely that I'm doing something wrong.

I successfully rendered a small portion of my video to using NTSC DV avi format. I then switched over to Video Capture. I opened the newly rendered file and switched to File Playback mode (as opposed to video capture mode). Anyhow, the two buttons appear for video playback and video record. Both buttons cause the image to play full screen but nothing appears on the camera. Pressing the video record button (in the software) doesn't start up my video camera.

I've even tried starting playback and manually pressing record on my Sony DV but no image ever makes it to the camera.

The weird thing is that I know the connection between camera and computer is fine because I have captured from the camera no problem. I just can't write anything back to it.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer!

Rodd

Go to this page and download the Troubleshooting OHCI Compliant Devices doc. It sounds like you may not have the correct drivers installed. If this doesn't allow your camera to be properly detected, please drop an e-mail.

I viewed the article you referred me to.

According to directions in the article, I have determined that I AM using MSDV.SYS driver. (As I understand it, that is the preferred driver.)

I have also installed both DirectX 8.0 and the DV driver to match with no apparent change in my problem.

The camera is definitley being recognized by the Video Capture software. I can control the camera (in capture mode ... FF, Play, Rew, etc.) I can also capture from the camera.

When the software is in File Playback (Print to tape) mode, the camera is recognized and the software tells me that it's communicating with my Microsoft DV device but the play and record functions only play the video on my screen and nothing ever gets to my camera ... it just sits there with its normal blue screen.

I forgot to mention. I have emailed tech support as you suggested. However, I'm not hopeful that they will be able to answer me as quickly as I need. I'm under a time crunch and hoping to get an answer before tomorrow afternoon.

I'm hoping maybe someone in the forum can help me a bit sooner than 36 hours.

Judging by your statements it sounds as though you are using Video Factory 1 and the seperate Vidcap tool. Please correct me if i am wrong. When you open vidcap and then switch to file playback mode you would need to hit the print to tape button after you have loaded your rendered video. This is the 3rd button from the end of the shuttle control (horizontal slider). It looks like a little camera with a record button under it. You should be set after that.

You were right on almost all accounts. I am using Video Factory 1.0 with the separate Vidcap 2.0 program. Yes, you are correct that I have to hit the video record button (camera with the little red dot) after I've loaded my rendered video.

I've done all that and still nothing. Pressing that button only causes Vidcap to play the video full screen. Still nothing gets to the camera.

Hi Rodd --

In Preferences, on the "General" tab, there's a preference for "Allow full screen playback via Preview on Camera or Print to Tape". Make sure that this is turned OFF.

This should take care of the full screen issue.

Hey Phil, Thanks for your input. I think you mis-understood my problem though. I really don't care if it plays back full screen or not. My issue is that nothing ever gets sent to the camera. Whether I use the camera playback button or record to tape button, the playback works on my computer screen but the camera just sits there and doesn't receive a single frame. I need to be able to get rendered .avi movie back to DV.

Hi Rodd,

There's a little confusion here. When that Full Screen pref is checked the preview and print to tape buttons get overridden to play the video back to the screen ONLY. This is for people who want to output to an analog device (e.g. VCR) via certain video cards which have multi-display capabilities (e.g. Matrox G400 dual head or the ATI All In Wonder).

To output to your DV device you MUST clear this full screen pref. checkbox.

Thanks!
