Serious, incapacitating problem with Import Media

GoodFellaJack wrote on 10/25/2011, 5:57 AM
On multiple occasions, attempting to import 1280x720 HD video shot on an Aiptek video camera leads to a crash - simply clicking on the video in the 'Import Media' browser triggers a shutdown and an error report. Four have been sent, with no response. Other video importing works without fault, including lower-quality footage shot on the same camera. It is vital that this problem is resolved as I am editing a video for a set deadline and need to import all the footage shot in all formats.

How fast is your processor, how much RAM do you have and how much free, clean, freshly defragmented space is on your C drive?

Also, which video settings did you select for your project?

And have you ensured you have the latest version of Quicktime, per the program's requirements?
musicvid10 wrote on 10/25/2011, 9:44 AM
Post your complete file details as reported by MediaInfo (free download from Sourceforge). Also your exact camera model.
GoodFellaJack wrote on 10/25/2011, 9:59 AM
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad CPU
Q8400 @2.66GHz
RAM: 4.00GB
Windows 7 64-bit
441GB free of 926

The camera:
Aiptek AHD H115
HD 1280x720p AVC H.264 Camcorder

Multiple settings tried - DVD video, Internet video, HDV, none work when attempting to import HD footage. Lower grade footage works but simply clicking on HD footage triggers an error report.

Please post your Quicktime version.
These details are essential for anyone to begin to be able to help.

QuickTime Version 7.7

Thanks again,

Are you setting up your Vegas project for AVCHD 1280x720 before you add your video?
musicvid10 wrote on 10/25/2011, 2:08 PM
Frame rate is a bit odd but that shouldn't prevent you from opening the file. Perhaps it is the single channel audio that is throwing Vegas a curve?

Download and install the trial version of Vegas Movie Studio 11.
If that works it will at least get you through your current project.

If you can upload that short clip somewhere (Mediafire or Dropbox) and post the URL, others here can look at it and make some suggestions. Then we can dig a little deeper and try to determine if it is a Quicktime problem, or if the video just needs remuxing or perhaps conversion.

I hope you haven't installed any "codec packs" on your computer? A Kernel error means Vegas didn't even make it to the point of trying to identify the file type.
GoodFellaJack wrote on 10/25/2011, 2:12 PM
Attempting to import video after making any setting - including HDV video, AVCHD and 'match media settings' results in the crash simply by clicking on a video file. The import process can't even begin. Clicking just once causes a crash. Any and all potential video settings have been attempted.

Did you get software with your camera? How about exporting the camera's footage to a MPEG2 what ever HD formats the (if) supplied software does? Not a real fix but might let you get your project done?
Markk655 wrote on 10/25/2011, 3:27 PM
Perhaps upload a copy of a short video file for someone here to test on their machines?
GoodFellaJack wrote on 10/26/2011, 5:52 AM
Everyone on here has been magnificent for their support, I thank you all for your help. A clip of the video will be on Mediafire in about ten minutes. I'll try the trial version of Vegas 11. To my knowledge, I have no codec packs but will try and root them out if they have burrowed themselves in there.

Thanks again, I appreciate you taking time out to help with my dire situation.

The clip. I hope there aren't serious problems with the clips, otherwise I am trapped in a chasm of worry!
ArtfulCodger wrote on 10/26/2011, 9:47 AM
Well Jack, I just tested your clip and WMS promptly crashed here as well.

I'll test a bit and see if i can "repair" the mp4 :)
musicvid10 wrote on 10/26/2011, 10:12 AM
Your clip opens and previews fine on Vegas Pro 8 with Quicktime 7.6.
So I can't help you with a fix from my end.
Try a simple remux in AVIDemux.
Try the VMS 11 trial version as I suggested.
GoodFellaJack wrote on 10/26/2011, 10:59 AM
VMS Pro 11 made no difference and crashed as usual. I am downloading from avidemux - do you think this editor will work with the files?
musicvid10 wrote on 10/26/2011, 11:13 AM
I don't know because I am having no problems on my system.
AVIDemux is a Muxer, not an editor, as its name implies.
It sometimes works with other AVC files that will not open in Vegas.

Some Vegas Pro users have had problems with QT 7.7 and have rolled back to 7.6
Again I have no idea if this will help with your problem.

Again, a Kernel error may suggest something more fundamental.

Best of luck.
GoodFellaJack wrote on 10/26/2011, 11:20 AM
Thanks. I think a Kernel error is the route, but a dll scan with DllSuite revealed no integral problems. It really is an enigma of a problem.
GoodFellaJack wrote on 10/26/2011, 3:08 PM
I have resorted to solving the problem by taking a £25 bath and buying HD conversion software that seems to be working, allowing footage to be converted into a slightly different file format and somehow bypassing the Kernel error. Vegas appears to be accepting it without fault.

Thank you for all of your help.

Jack
