Sony Vegas Pro 11 - GPU Support

cal79 wrote on 10/18/2011, 6:47 AM
Seen on the sony performance web page they tested a Quadro 5000 card, great results. I thought my NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800 would have been supported? I only purchased it 12 months ago costing me a lot of $, I see some of the cheaper cards supported.. would really like to take advantage of the 1GB power my GPU has to offer, VP11 doesn't offer me use of any GPU performance from it,

I also can't use the vegas stabilizer plugin, apply box is grayed out, probably because I have no GPU support? anyone having issues like this? can anyone enlighten me?

Kind Regards
Cal

"I also can't use the vegas stabilizer plugin, apply box is grayed out, probably because I have no GPU support? anyone having issues like this? can anyone enlighten me?"Suspect your problem is not GPU related, but rather that the new stabilizer must be applied as a Media FX - not an Event FX. Right click on the clip in the "Project Media" tab & select "Media FX..."

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for responding, you've made it clear for me, I was adding the plugin as an Event FX instead of a "Media FX." They really shouldn't list this plugin under the Event FX's if it's not applied like that.

Regarding GPU acceleration, in my preferences / video tab, my GPU is off, I have no option to turn it on,

Are Sony seriously not supporting my excellent costly NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800 ? :O

Unfortunately, the compute capability of your card is only 1.3 (surprising!). Vegas 11 requires 2.0 to do it's work. I feel your pain.

See all cards here.

Am I to understand correctly that it's on it's way then? or did I just waste £800 on my high end graphics card? It's very annoying for people in my position to find out that cards less than a fraction of the cost of what we paid are supported and we are left waiting, I do hope that support is on it's way?

Until then I guess i'll have to wait a see about GPU acceleration :(

I was having trouble getting any advantage using the GPU even though my graphics card is on the list of compliant cards and has a compute capability of 2.0 or better. Turns out (reading the fine print) that you must also have driver version 270.xx or later (for Nvidia cards) and mine was 260.xx

I now have a modest improvement in rendering times (which varies a fair bit depending on the format of the source footage and the output file of the render) but I do see excellent preview speeds. I dropped some DSLR footage and some AVCHD footage on the timeline, added a couple of simple transitions and a couple of FX and got rock solid playback at Best (half) and just a couple of dropped frames at Best (Full). Without CUDA the preview was littered with dropped frames.

Hi ForumSonyAdmin,
Thanks for the information. I wasn't aware of that statement.

Are you aware of the 'Check GPU' button in the Sony AVC/MVC template's render dialog's system tab? In my case, if I click that button, it says "CUDA is available." However, if I go to Options|Preferences Video tab, the GPU acceleration drop-down list only contains "Off."

So, SVPro 11 is indicating (or at least implying) support in one location, but not offering it in another.

I had posted in another thread that this may indicate multiple levels of CUDA support (i.e. in separate SVPro 11 functional areas). Do you know whether this is true? If not, can you find out?

Thanks so much,
Jerald

Hi Jerald,

Just to confirm, I've got the same thing going on with my own setup, GPU assistance is available to me when rendering with the Sony AVC temp, but it's not available in preferences / video tab, so we can't benefit from the process playback performance, fingers crossed we get sooner rather than later.

I've got a Quadro FX3800 card. I was going to upgrade from Vegas Pro 10 to VP 11. I'll wait for a fix or wait for VP12 (maybe). Too bad; I bought this card with GPU acceleration in mind.

Just a heads up for those who may not already know this. Update 425 for v11 states the compute value can now be less than 2.0. So for example the FX3800 Quadro has a compute value of 1.3, that didn't used to work and would not show up in Vegas Prefs GPU setting, but it should now work! Just apply build 425. (thats 424 for 32bit versions).

Same kind of experience here. Using b425 a low-level Nvidia card GT 320M (285.38 driver) with compute capability 1.2 and a customised template with 'GPU if available' vs. 'CPU only' or 'automatic' gave 30 to 40 per cent faster rendering. Preferences give the option of GPU acceleration off only.
paul_w wrote on 11/4/2011, 9:00 PM
vkmast, the GT320M is not listed on the nvidia website, is yours the GT 320? (no M). That has a compute of only 1.0 That may be too low. Possibly. I wish Sony would make it more clear just how low this value can be. Saying "less than 2" is quite vague.

Paul.
vkmast wrote on 11/4/2011, 9:03 PM
paul, this IS the GT 320M, which is NOT officially listed on the Nvidia site and has compute capability of 1.2 according to e.g. GPU-Z.
paul_w wrote on 11/4/2011, 9:05 PM
ah ok. Interesting. So not EVERY card is listed on there. As said, dont know what the lowest limit is.

Paul.
vkmast wrote on 11/4/2011, 9:08 PM
Also interestingly, it IS listed on the supported products list of the driver...
paul_w wrote on 11/4/2011, 9:12 PM
weird, try banging them an email and ask why, and confirm the compute value?

Paul.
vkmast wrote on 11/4/2011, 9:13 PM
paul, as it seems to work, I'm ok :)
paul_w wrote on 11/4/2011, 9:17 PM
yeah for rendering, but you're not getting GPU acceleration in vegas prefs right?

Paul.
vkmast wrote on 11/4/2011, 9:18 PM
That's correct.
In fact, SCS says that the 285.62 driver is the first for GPU acceleration (with a GeForce GT 2xx Series or higher), mine's a 285.38.
paul_w wrote on 11/4/2011, 9:20 PM
Needs both. Then you get the full deal. Will render even faster and previews with better fps too. Hope this helps.

Paul.

Will try later to update the driver and see what happens. Seems a bit of bother with the newer driver at the moment according to some of the messages even on this forum. Thankyou for the tips :)
