hi just got soundforge and have never used any other audio software ever, so any advice will be greatly appreciated as i am the 'definition' of NOVICE!

ok, i recorded a 74min dj mix with it and managed to do ok i think - no clipping, sounds good but a huge file obviously.

now i wanna clean it up & enhance it by compressing it, putting in some effects, overlaying some other sounds etc. so i went to delete the initial 3second gap that preceeds the mix and that process time took a good 8-9minutes!!! i have HEAPS of disk space & memory and a fast processor. am i doing something wrong? i heard i should break the file up do my edits, enhancemens ets then mix the files together again....but i haven't got a clue how to do that??? i've tried making regions but that didn't help?

please advise on anything....

thanks.

Check your email!

First, the length of time for SF to do a simple deletion is also what bugs me about it.

I suggest you consult the help files or manual to help you.

Tools | Extract Regions... is what you are looking for.

when you deal with a file of that length editing at the begining takes longer beacuse the whole file has to be shifted in the new time frame. go through your file and choose where you want to make changes and place markers (m key)(you can do this while the file is playing.) when you go through the file you can copy these regons between the markers to a new file and make changes easier or just put up with the time it takes to make TIME changes in the file. changes that have to take into account amplitude factors to alter specific areas of the wave form will not take as much time when working with just that area

This problem of taking a long time to cut some blank space off of the front of a file has been around ever since Sound Forge has been released. The part I find ironic is that SF said, they totally built Sound Forge 5.0 from new code (ie...none of the code of 4.5 was used). I guess they didn't think this was a problem and didn't need fixing? I have Wavelab 3.0 installed on the same system along with Sound Forge 4.5 and 5.0. I have a song which is approx. 4 minutes long, and has 7 seconds of silence in the front that I want to cut off.
When I cut it off in SF 4.5 and 5.0 it is approximately a 5 second task. When I cut it off in Wavelab it is instantaneous...ie no time to do the cut. The same type of scenario happens when you do a simple Copy and Paste to a New file. Just to do a Copy of this 4 min song it takes 11 seconds and then another 11 seconds to do the paste. To do the same thing in Wavelab it again is instantaneous. I thought the "German Engineering" scenario only applied automobiles, I guess it applies in Audio software also?

The even more ironic thing is that you can do these same kind of functions in Vegas and they are also instantaneous. Maybe Sonic Foundry should let the Vegas Programmers talk to the Sound Forge programmers and trade some secrets. :-) Ahhh...I know, I'm probably comparing apples to oranges with this, because Vegas and Sound Forge probably handle these tasks in a different manner.

Cutting, editing, and other functions are instantanious in Cool Edit as well. It's a SF annoyance, for sure!
