Any workarounds so the DX FX will show up in later Vegas versions?

Hi, I remember that some other people were having trouble with no DX effects loading or being available in later versions of Vegas (after 2.0b, I think) if they used DX 8.0a. I recently tried re-installing DX 8.0a and updating from 2.0d to 2.0h and got the same problem of no registered or available DX effects so I had to go back to DX7. Anybody know what the workaround(s) are to enable DX effects to show up with DX 8.0a and later versions of Vegas?

Hello:

It is possible to self register the Direct X effects that are inherant to Vegas. To do this you would want to open Vegas and then minimize the application. The procedure from here on out is assuming that you had let Vegas install to the default location. You would want to double click into my computer>then into your C drive>then into program files>then into the plain Sonic Foundry folder>then into shared plugins>then into audio. Once here you should see several .dll files. At this point you would then want to bring Vegas back up as well as keep the audio folder open so that you have both on your screen. You would then want to drag the sfppack1.dll Vegas and let go of the left mouse button. You will then see a message that states "The file C:\program files\sonic foundry\shared plugins\Audio\sfppack1.dll is a Direct X plugin that supports self registration. Vegas Video can automatically register this plugin for use in all Direct X compatible applications. Would you like to register it not (click No to un-register)?. You would want to choose no. Then drag the same file back onto Vegas and drop it and choose yes. You would want to repeat this procedure for the rest of the sfppack files as well as the sftrkfx files. This should get all of our plugins appearing in the application properly. If you are having this problem with plugins that are not ours or the above suggestion does not help you please contact our Technical Support department directly. You can do this via email at support@sonicfoundry.com or http://www.sonicfoundry.com/support/supportmail.asp.

Hi Dave and thanks. Unfortunately the problem is with any and all plug-ins from any manufacturer (and I have most every plug-in available). Tony

Hi Tony:

I would reccomend that you drop our technical support department an email. You can do this by writing support@sonicfoundry.com or via a web page at http://www.sonicfoundry.com/support/supportmail.asp. I am somewhat confused by your post as well. How did you switch back to Direct X 7 from 8? To my knowledge you cannot uninstall Direct X 8 from within Windows. I do realize there applications out there that will allow you to do this but how reliably is questionable. Also if you are running Vegas 2.0d or higher you would need to have Direct X 8 installed for Vegas. This is a system requirement for 2.0d or higher. I still would suggest that you get in touch with Technical Support. They will be able to get back to a completly clean install of Vegas at least.

Hi Dave,

To answer your questions about how I was able to uninstall DX8 - prior to installing it I enabled GoBack and took a complete system-wide "snapshot", then after trying DX8 and finding it unworkable due to no effects in Vegas I used GoBack to go back to the point just before I installed DX8. This returned my system to DX7 and as it turns out, 2.0d works just fine with DX7 and actually doesn't need DX8 to run (it apparently only needs it for the installation). I'm only using the audio features and none of the video features of Vegas. Programs like DXBuster enable you to install Vegas with DX8, then uninstall DX8, re-install DX7 and have Vegas work perfectly. I'm using Vegas 2.0d with DX7 and it works flawlessly and crashlessly - and has all DX effects. Tony

Just remember: Hack your way around the DX8 requirement and we cannot offer tech support for this product.

Doesn't make much business sense to make a product that doesn't work with DX8 and then tell previously very loyal users that if they try and stick with Vegas or make it work you won't support them and that all future upgrades are useless to them. Sounds like it's finally time to go with Nuendo (which works just fine with DX8).

Vegas absolutely does work with DirectX8- thousands of users will verify this.

Something is messed up on your system- perhaps try using the AnalogX to temporarily disable your installed DirectX plug-ins. That sounds like the root fo your problem. Otherwise, a reformat will almost always clear out the gremlins.

I wish it were that easy but all my other audio programs and plug-ins (huge collection) work just fine with DX8 - only Vegas doesn't. Fortunately it works great with DX7 (after I solved various plug-in conflicts by using Dr.DX - it's like AnalogX's program but also enables you to re-enable the plugs easily). And I know from other posts on this and other boards that I'm not the only one with this problem with Vegas and DX8.
