I love LG monitors.

Are you looking for a specific brand or model or what?

no, just looking for insights based on people's experiences. what do you dig about the LG's? you prompted me to look at LG's E2770V-BF (27") which seems to have a super contrast ratio but i was surprised to see a response time of 14ms. how relevant do you believe these specs to be and which do you most pay attention to? i was eyeing the HP 2711X and the Viewsonic VX2753MH as candidates under $350.

Well, the truth is you're not likely to find a BAD one, if you're buying a monitor made in the last few years. (And you're not likely to even notice a 14ms response time.)

How precise do you need the color reproduction to be? Are you a high-end graphic designer who also plans to invest several hundred dollars in calibration equipment so that you know that the exact color you see is exactly what you'll get?

Me neither. Very good is good enough for me. Especially since 99% of what I'll be making will be viewed on a TV that may or may not be adjusted precisely.

The way I see it is that you've got a choice. Either just go for a good brand name monitor (LG, Samsung, Sony) -- or go all out and spend a fortune for a professional model.

Maybe others will disagree, but I really don't think there is a bad choice. As long as it's got good, clean resolution and a good contrast ratio, you'll be fine. (I've also learned to take consumer reviews with a grain of salt.)

Samsung and Samsung OEM monitors are totally unsuited for critical video editing, for a number of reasons I won't go into here. Mine makes a pretty good HDTV screen for my bedroom, but that's about it. I do all my editing on my notebook even though the screen is much smaller.

There was some spirited discussion about ASUS vs. Samsung here:
