I have Acid Music Studio 8. I use an M-Audio 24/96 sound card into a small Mackie mixer. I record audio from Kontakt played on a MIDI keyboard. Regular audio, not MIDI. But when I record a second track, the first track gets recorded as well. I need to hear the first track to play along, but I don't want to record it. This seems simple, but I'm not sure how to do it. The reason I use a mixer is because I have a Ketron synth module as well. It hooks up to the soundcard's MIDI and the mixer's line in 3-4. I have no problem recording through lines 1 or 2 with guitar or mic. It's just what I play through Kontakt and the MIDI controller/keyboard. Thanks for any help.

If you're using your MIDI keyboard to control Kontakt, you need to record a MIDI track, not digital audio. (Either that or I'm not understanding your signal flow.)

MIDI keyboard > Audiophile 2496 > Kontakt (in ACID)?

Hi mD, thanks for responding! I was using Kontakt as a standalone, so it's MIDI keyboard - Kontakt - 2496- Acid Music Studio 8. My thinking was that several instances of Kontakt as a plug-in would be too much for my system, but I should probably give it a try first. I would need 4 instances on average for each of my songs. Using MIDI, I also wouldn't be able to use plugins during mixing, I'd have to wait for mastering, wouldn't I? I listed my system specs below:

I should've said that after the 2496 comes a Mackie mixer, then into Acid.

If I recall, Kontakt can load more than several instruments/samples in any given instance?

Wouldn't exactly call your system a dinosaur; just make sure nothing else is running while ACID is running and give running Kontakt as a plug-in a shot.

Just in case someone else needs help with this, the other solution I learned was to have an ALT 3-4 on your mixer. Mine, unfortunately, does not.

From reading page "7" of the 402-VLZ3 manual, your mixer [I]IS[/I] capable of handling basic mono or two channel overdubbing. It appears to be able to handle as many as four (4) inputs simultaneously.

page 7:
"For overdubbing, you will be playing live, and recording a new track onto the computer through the tape outputs. You can listen to the pre-recorded tracks and your live playing at the same time in the headphones. Adjust the tape level to find a nice mix of the playback compared to your playing. If the "assign to main" (button) is out, then the pre-recorded tracks will not appear in the tape out or main mix, so only your new playing is recorded. ******"(This would seem to address the issue from your original post)"******

To playback the recording, adjust the tape level control to hear it in the headphones. Press "assign to main" (button) in, and slowly bring up the main mix level to hear the results of all your efforts in the studio monitors."

I noticed you listed Band-In-A-Box in one of your posts above. What do you use it for? I've been a BB user since the early 1990's. I mainly use it as a "backing" rhythm section to work out jazz licks & runs (I play sax----its much easier to fire up BB than it is to get guys to come over for a jam session). Over the years, BB has provided me with some of the most fun I've ever had using a computer...its a great product.

I suppose, if one worked at it, BB could be used to create background music tracks for videos. ...probably would require some basic knowdledge of music, though.
