I am using SF 9.0e. I do understand that this is not the greatest way to add to a sound track. Is there any way to monitor channels 1&2 while recording to channel 3? Using ProFire 2626 as audio interface. I can hear the sound just fine. But I have not found the playback controls for playback of other channels while recording. I do understand that it is not a true multitrack recorder. Just trying to find out if there is a control for this or not. Thanks |

Your thread title is a bit inaccurate. What you are asking for are multitrack capabilities, that Sound Forge does not natively provide. That does not preclude you from monitoring your reference tracks through a separate playback method as you record in Sound Forge. You may want to download trial versions of Vegas and Acid, and see which of those multitrack audio solutions would work best for you. Message last edited on8/3/2011 9:07:36 AM bymusicvid10. |

Thank you for your quick reply! Sorry about the word mix up in my thread. I am aware that what I am asking about is normally a multitracking feature in multitracking software. I was just hoping that I would not have to go out of SF to record an addition to what I was editing in SF, and since the programmers were so nice to provide multichannels it would be a nice feature, although very limited I'm sure. Thanks again for your response |

The capabilities of SF are Multichannel, not Multitrack.... i.e. you can work on files that contain multiple channels e.g. .WAV extensible format, which can carry more than 1 or 2 channels. However you can't easily overdub as in Multitrack application. |

Vondo, what you are trying to do is like operating a spreadsheet in Word. Vaguely possible, but ridiculously complicated and difficult. Use the right tool for the job, if you can afford it ! There are freeware tools available that can do it (albeit inellegant) if Vegas, Acid, Reaper , etc are out of your price range. geoff |

Don't overlook the Studio line either. Vegas Movie Studio and ACID Studio are both very affordable and both offer multitrack recording and monitoring. There's also an upgrade path from those to the full Pro versions. |

To be clear, only ACID Pro and Vegas Pro support software input monitoring. While you can hear the existing tracks during record, you will have to use external/hardware to monitor you input during recording. Peter Message last edited on8/4/2011 2:33:00 AM bypwppch. |

True enough, but at least you can hear the other tracks while recording a new one. And if the sync is off because of lack of input monitoring it's nearly effortless to align the new track after it's recorded. |
