Boris RED 5 for Sony Vegas Pro 10 On Sale for $695

JohnnyRoy wrote on 7/14/2011, 4:22 AM
I know some editors here are considering Boris RED 5 and were talking about how it cost a lot more than BCC7 but it also includes BCC7 and Final Effects Complete, and a whole lot more... well Boris is offering RED 5 for only $695 which is only $100 more than BCC7. It's a great deal if you were "sitting on the fence" about buying it.

Here is the description from the email I just got:

"Boris RED is the only integrated 3D compositing, titling, and effects application to deliver unparalleled performance to Sony Vegas Pro and other industry-leading video editing software applications. An indispensable tool for post-production and broadcast professionals, RED offers a wide range of features right on your Vegas Pro timeline and adds a standalone engine for effects creation and rendering. RED integrates broadcast-quality text generators, paint, rotoscoping, a full suite of tools to create and extrude vector objects, true 3D shapes and animation, and the industry’s most comprehensive image processing filter suite. "

Here is the shopping cart link:

Buy Boris RED for $695 (regularly $995)

Hope this saves someone some money. ;-)

What's the learning curve on RED 5 (assuming I've never used any Boris products).
Thanks.

I already have BCC7 for Vegas. I'm doing a lot of compositing work lately and going back and forth between Vegas and After Effects is time consuming. Is it worth getting Red if you already have BCC7?

I guess the answer lies in (1) what is your time worth? and (2) can you do that compositing in RED 5 instead of AE? If the answer to (2) is YES then (1) is almost a no brainer. Working with RED in Vegas is way better than rendering out to AE, working in AE, then rendering back to Vegas, again, and again, and again. The fact that you have BCC7 already is irrelevant if you are still going to AE a lot. BCC7 is just a small part of RED. It sounds like you would benefit from the compositing capabilities of RED 5 regardless of owning BCC7 or not.

Why don't you download the trial and use it for a week and see if you are willing to go back to the AE workflow once it expires.

About the same as After Effects. It's a new tool and you need to learn how to use it. Since you already know Vegas, the RED timeline will be familiar and adding FX to a track and changing the parameters will be familiar, and compositing modes will be familiar, so you should pick it up rather quickly.

Why don't you watch my webinar reply and observe the workflow for yourself:

Custom Effects and Titles with Boris RED 5

That should give you a pretty good idea of what it's like. Then download the trial if you think you'd like to use it.

The fact that I can use it within Vegas rather than rendering out sections would make it well worth it for me. I am doing a lot of ad work lately and it is full of compositing and rendering out sections and inserting them into Vegas projects only to find that they need further tweaking and going back and forth that way is really frustrating.

Johnny, you had some presets in your webminar that are made available on the Boris website which I installed but just cannot find them in Vegas or Red.

http://borisfx.com/webinar/

Do they install as Vegas presets and are they the same presets you had in the webminar? FYI, I am running an expired demo.

If After Efffects is essential to your workflow, another way to go of course is to use Premiere Pro for editing. I understand that the two interface together nicely. You can get Premiere Pro or Production Premium CS5.5 for under half price at VideoGuys at the moment. The special is aimed at FCP users, but even old Premiere products qualify.

No flames please, and I hope I don't get blacklisted! :)

It looks like Boris Red 5 integration is similar to the way that After Effects is integrated with Premiere Pro. I would rather stick with Vegas. It would take me a long time to get as proficient as I am in Vegas with Premier Pro. Not that it isn't a good editor, I just really like Vegas.

Red & AE are two competing products, they do a lot of the same same. The difference is that RED isn't made to integrate in to a specific program, it can be integrated in to a few programs.

When I was looking at motion tracking software I looked at it. I just wanted motion tracking & both RED & BCC motion tracking didn't cut it for me. While RED was an excellent deal @ $1k, I wanted on part. . While BCC's tracking was cheaper, it was pretty limited for what I wanted. I went with a different program anyway for ~$400 (2x more then the BCC stuff) but it's just motion tracking & does it a lot better & does more for motion tracking.

But I actually had my wife convinced that Red was worth the price at the time. I felt it was.

For those that already own BCC7, Boris offers a cross-grade upgrade to Boris Red 5 for $395 according to Customer Service. It is not listed on Boris' online store. You need to call Boris to purchase the cross-grade upgrade.

I should have started with JRs webinar. I wasted several hours trying to get familiar with RED on my own. Exercise in frustration, to say the least. I wasn't looking forward to learning a new UI, but after the webinar I was pretty comfortable with it. I really, really like the preview screen interactors.

These are Vegas presets. When you apply RED 5 as an FX in Vegas Pro, instead of launching the GUI, select the Preset drop down and you should see the following presets:

Then when you apply RED 5 as a Transition in Vegas Pro, you should see the following presets:

The film fx are showing as Vegas presets but not the transitions.

I don't even think your transitions appear in the RED 5 presets, I could be wrong, unless they are spreaded with the Red 5 presets, I couldn't find any.

Excellent webinar JonnyRoy!
Boris Red looks very interesting and looks like a great deal for all it does. Does it have a color matching effect where it can match the colors of two clips shot on different cameras?

Unfortunately I had (with my typical incredibly bad sense of timing) purchased Red5 right before I read this post. I just called the service department and am trying to get them to retroactively give me this discount. I will post how this works out here. Anyway, this deal is very real and anyone who owns BCC-7 would be foolish not to take advantage of it if you can afford it. This is about the most useful add-on to Vegas that one can imagine.

Edit: I just got off the phone with Matt Caravella at BorisFX customer service. They are going to refund me the $300 difference between what I paid and this discount! What a great product and what great customer service!

For anyone that has already bought BCC-7, this deal is really too good to pass up!

Been looking at Boris RED for a long time and decided to purchase yesterday. Looking forward to using it. Thanks JonnyRoy for sharing and for the tut!

I have a newbie question regarding Boris Red. Are there separate versions for each supported host application? For example, is this sale price only for the Vegas version, or will it also work in After Effects (or would I have to buy a separate one for After Effects)? I'm assuming (if I understand correctly) that Boris Red is a standalone product, but the BCC7 which comes with it may be host application specific?

GJeffrey wrote on 7/19/2011, 6:05 PM
@ crocdoc

No this is the same version for all windows hosts (AE, PP, Vegas). Upon installing RED5 you choose which host (several possible of course) you want to install the plugin in.
crocdoc wrote on 7/19/2011, 7:14 PM
That being the case, is there a reason the link provided by JohnnyRoy at the start of this thread goes to a page which has 'Boris Red 5 for Sony Vegas' rather than just Boris Red 5?
I'll probably be using it with After Effects rather than Vegas, therefore my query. The only link I can find at this price specifically says 'for Sony Vegas'.
CClub wrote on 7/19/2011, 7:35 PM
Maybe it's just me, but I can't think of any occasion where I'd use the titling options in the link to BorisTV listed above (borisfx.com/videos). I've seen a number of Boris online videos showing great effects, tracking fx, etc., but there must be links to Red 5 titling options that are closer to what may be used in online videos, documentaries, movies?

I'm not sure why Boris FX sells it this way. There is only one RED 5 download and when you install it, it will find all of the hosts that it works with and prompt you to install for each one using the same license. I only have one license for RED 5 and it shows up under both Vegas Pro 10 and After Effects CS5 on my system.
