By the time you can afford the Surface, Vegas should be up to Version 20. Right now it's a concept project limited to some trade shows and CSI programs.

According to ZDnet, It will be available in late 2011, and the price of the hardware will be $7,600.

It's basically a supersized Tablet. I haven't seen any demos that show any more than supersized photo albums or a few games.

I can afford it if it works.

Vegas used to be quite a revolutionary and unique UI for NLEs.

Now that all the other NLE editors are catching up in terms of UI, maybe it's time for Vegas to take it up another notch.

exactly how would you work with it!?

seems like something novel for a coffee table, but as a working interface.....

I can see this technology helping with live broadcasts. (audio and video mixers)
Post, well I'll think about it.

I wouldn't use the table layout, I would angle it like a drafting table. The added bonus to this setup is that I can keep my centre audio channel at ear level without the monitor getting in the way. It would be like using a large mixing console.

I'm always looking for ways to become more efficient and improve my speed.

With constant use of the scroll wheel on the mouse, my right hand stiffens up after about 4 hours of constant work. So just for the added ergonomic benefits alone, it would be awesome.

I use Vegas mostly for audio mixing, so I'm constantly zooming in and out on waveforms / timeline and scrolling up and down about 20 tracks of dialogue / music / sfx etc... and using ctrl-alt-shift and the scroll wheel together to frame bump

With multi-touch, the possibilities would really open up how workflows could improve.
The editor itself may be non-linear, but the UI control is still very linear.

Say you want to fix the contrast/brightness of a clip

Step 1 - stop playback
Step 2 - double click clip to setup a loop
Step 3 open plugin window and add a plugin
Step 4 press play
Step 5 adjust contrast
Step 6 adjust brightness
Step 7 maybe adjust contrast again

Simple play / stop / loop functions could easily happen with one hand, while the other adds the plugin.

Adjusting 2 parameters at the same time would definitely speed up dialing in the right amount of the effect.

Once you got used to jumping around the screen using whatever finger is closest, you would feel that the mouse is extremely limiting.

It would be like going back to a single button mouse.

Imagine scrubbing back and forth the playback head with your left hand instead of using a jog wheel, while at the same time moving a clip into place with your right hand.

or scrubbing and adjusting keyframes at the same time

entirely new workflows could be created

like maybe if you wanted to do a volume envelope change for a section, right now you double click the clip you want and it will add 4 dots at the edges of the clip, then you can apply a shelf.

Imagine the freedom you'd have if you could simply select the area, by putting one finger on the starting point and one finger at the ending point using one hand, and then using the other hand to raise and lower the shelf. That would be way easier.

in short it would be revolutionary and it would impress the hell out of the clients :)
