Drag & drop on timeline mess up?

marcel-vossen wrote on 6/27/2011, 12:38 AM
Hello guys,

I have been wondering this for a long time...

Whenever I have a series of clips from my Canon 5D Mark 2 that are in the correct order in the explorer (numbered from filename001 to filename012 for example) , they always get messed up when I drag and drop them on the timeline?

The order is not correct, for some reason, the 001 for example mostly ends up being the last one or they are in complete random order, I can't figure out the logic behind it

Its giving me a headache re-arranging stuff again afterwards...

Does anyone know why this happens?

Since you haven't filled out your System Specs, we can't offer much help:

Just guessing that you're dragging media from the Windows Explorer and that you don't have the Explorer window sorted by the name column.

Hi there,

No of course not! In the windows explorer I got them listed exactly in the correct order sorted by name , I just checked again...

List for example looks like this in Explorer:

Kim&Tom 001.MOV.mxf
Kim&Tom 002.MOV.mxf
Kim&Tom 003.MOV.mxf
Kim&Tom 004.MOV.mxf
Kim&Tom 005.MOV.mxf
Kim&Tom 006.MOV.mxf
Kim&Tom 007.MOV.mxf
Kim&Tom 008.MOV.mxf
Kim&Tom 009.MOV.mxf
Kim&Tom 010.MOV.mxf
Kim&Tom 011.MOV.mxf
Kim&Tom 012.MOV.mxf

As I dragged them onto the timeline, the order is like this:

004, 005, 006 to 012 and then 001,002,003

As far as I know, its always the case that the first group of files gets attached at the back of the timeline randomly, so there is SOME kind of order, just not the correct one!

I also have this in older Vegas versions, I have 9 on here too, and that has the same issue...

I was pretty certain that this is a Windows issue. I always drag media from my timeline and never had a sequence problem.

Until now.

Here's how I do it: In Windows Explorer, select the "Details" view, sort on "Name", highlight the files then drag & drop them on the Vegas timeline.

You're right, out of ten media files selected, sequentially named, if I highlight the group of files in Explorer and drag them as a group into the Vegas Timeline, they drop on the timeline as "04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 1, 2, 3"

If I control-click on them one at a time and drag *that* group to the Vegas timeline, then they load correctly.

But, I am still not convinced that this isn't a Windows issue. In a former life I was a programmer and drag&drop of groups of files from Explorer was always "with issues".

Now, if I drag the files from the Windows Explorer into the "Project Media" window, then highlight all media and drag that to the Vegas Timeline, then it works as expected. It's an extra step, but it's all going into the "Project Media" window anyway.

Thanks Steve for trying this!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that can reproduce this error ;)

I hadn't tried that yet, but thats a good workaround I think, thanks for your help, I think its way better than having to re-arrange all the files again after dropping them.

WARNING: Don't try this trick in Vegas 9 though...it crashed after I dropped the group of files into the Project media...
I think Sony might change their advertising slogan for Vegas to:

"Sony Vegas Pro, do you feel lucky today, PUNK?" ;)

Have a nice day!

When you drag 'n drop in ANY Windows application, first select all the files you want to cut or copy. Then -- and this is the important part -- make sure to point to the file that you want to appear first in the window into which you are going to drag them (in this case, the Vegas timeline).

If you simply put the mouse over the middle of the group of selected files, whatever file you happen to point to when you click and hold the mouse to begin the drag will end up being the first file in the resulting operation.

Windows has always operated like this. It has nothing to do with your system specifications or anything else about your specific computer setup.

From your problem description I suspect this may help you get your head around what's happening when you drag files into the Vegas Time Line.
The following paragraph was copied from the Vegas On-Line help guide:

"Events are created where you drop the files (and the media files are added to the Project Media window if you're using the Explorer).

The order of the events is determined by file that you click before dragging and the order of the files in the Explorer or Project Media window: for example, select the files A.wav, B.wav, and C.wav. Right-click B.wav and drag the files to the timeline. When the shortcut menu is displayed, choose Add Across Time. When you drop the files, B.wav will be added as the first event, followed by A.wav and C.wav"

Thanks John and Dan!

You are absolutely right, it works!
I never heard or noticed that before...but its true! It actually makes a difference WHERE you point when you start dragging, go figure!

Have a nice day
