Subject:MIDI won't play

I'm very new to sound recording and editing. I don't even know how midi works.

However, somehow I have managed to hookup my keyboard such that I can record what I play on my keyboard in Acid pro. I can even save my midi recordings to .wav files.

Now for my problem,...
If I open a MIDI file that I created in another program or a song that I downloaded from somewhere with a .midi extension, it will not play???!!!

I open the .midi file and the name shows up in the list of current tracks. However nothing shows up in wave form area to the right of the track listing. When I record something from my keyboard with Acid pro there is a corresponding waveform to the right of the track listing.

The .midi songs that I downloaded and files that I have created in another application play fine in something like win amp.

Bob,

I'm guessing you need to set your MIDI device for playback in ACID's settings. Here's how to do this:

1. Open Acid.
2. Click the "Options" menu and select "Preferences".
3. Click the "MIDI" tab.
4. There will be a window that displays all the current MIDI devices available on your machine. Find the device that you wish to use for MIDI playback and check it (since you're using an external keyboard, you'll probably want to select your MIDI Out port, perhaps listed as "XXXX MIDI Out [####]" or something similar).
5. Click "OK".
6. Load a MIDI track into the timeline. Over by the library (where it lists the file name and shows the faders), click the bus selection button, which is directly to the right of the track name. Make sure your MIDI out port is selected if you want to hear your keyboard. If you want to use the internal synth, select the "Master", and play away.
7. Also, make sure your keyboard MIDI cables are hooked up properly, ie, in-to-out, out-to-in.

Hope this helps,
Nick LaMartina

i have done that. like i said, i can play music that i imported from the keyboard. so wiring is not a problem. its when i try to import midi from a .midi file that i cannot play back the song.

maybe i'm missing the instruments for those songs?? how do i get more instruments and where do i install them?

problem solved....

for some reason when i open the midi file it has no time length. so i used the sideways arrow tool to stretch the length in the waveforem area to the right of the track listings. the waveform appears and thus plays.

You have to draw out or "paint" an event, just like in audio.

This is by design.

What about in Acid Music 3.0c I hear nothing even after painting. The default MIDI instrument is SB and is NOT muted looking at the volume control in Windows. No place to select midi out in Preferences or on the track itself. No blue box inside a box.

The specs say I can play back Midi in all versions of ACID, just don't know how.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

ACID Music does will only play MIDI through the internal DirectMusic Softsynth. To play to external MIDI devices you will need ACID Pro 3.0.

OK so that makes sense. Was that in the manual?

Anyway, I found that midi was playing but only on channel 16. When I would put all midi instruments on channel 16 I could hear everything.

Are you only limited to channel 16?

Is there someway to interface with the internal music thing that plays midi for ACID.

Please read the response I gave you in this earlier thread ....

No.

Don't know what you mean by "internal music thing".

What kind of "interfacing" do you want to do?

Peter
